BA Athletics Club News Special - 2nd March 2022

The club has three key events over the next few months and we would like your participation and support for each one.  The club would like each of these to be a success, but that can only happen with your support.

BAAC Tom Rowley Cross Country, Sunday 20th March, 10:30 start

A reminder that this event is less than three weeks away.

We will be celebrating Tom’s dedication, to several clubs and to many runners, with a Cross Country race in Cranford Park.

The course includes open grassland and a wooded section, and will be well marked and marshalled.  Each lap is just over 1.5 miles, is flat and generally holds up well even during wet seasons.  Ladies will be invited to run two laps, men three laps.

This is an invitational race with no fee to enter. All BAAC members and friends are invited to enter and we have also issued invitations to runners from Woking A.C. and Milocarians A.C. and are willing to invite others.

How can you help?

  • Please consider running this event on the day. Let Steve know in advance so that we can pre-allocate numbers,
  • Also if you would like others to run it, please ask Steve for an invitation for them,
  • We also need marshals to assist at the finish or on the course, please let Steve know ASAP if you are able to assist.

Thank you,

Race Organiser: Steve Hillier (stevehillier@msn.com)

BAAC Speedbird Ladies, Wednesday 11th May, 18:30 start (tbc)

Speedbird Ladies, 2017Our annual ladies race is expected to be held on Harmondsworth Moor on this date using its traditional course. The course is about 5k with some undulations. We have not yet had permission from BA to run the event on the moor and if that is not forthcoming we may have to switch the venue to Cranford Park. Once confirmed this will be an open race with participants required to register in advance (sign-up on the day may also be available). Details will be communicated via the regular digest, via Facebook and on this website page: baRUNNER Event Ladies Race page.

How can you help?

  • Please keep this date reserved in your diary,
  • Everyone - communicate it to friends and colleagues and encourage them to enter,
  • Ladies - we would prefer it if you entered and ran in the event,
  • Men - we will appreciate it if you are available on the evening to marshal or help with the finish, or just to cheer on the ladies,
  • BA Employees - if you think that you can help us influence BA to give permission to use the moorland for the event then please contact Simon.

Concorde One Hour Race - Sunday 5th June, 10:00 start

Concorde One Hour LogoThis will be held on the closed road circuit of the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit in Hayes. We have an exclusive hire for the morning and the race will be to see what distance participants can run in one hour. Mo Farah holds the world record with 21.33km run in one hour and Sifan Hassan holds the ladies record at 18.93km.

We are using Active Training World to assist with the admin and the Chip Timing Company to help with the results. This means that the race can't be cheap - registration starts at £20 plus 6% service charge. But what participants get for their money is impressive:

  • A closed traffic-free road circuit – also great for spectators and with no headphone restrictions,
  • Km markers up to 10k,
  • Chip timing,
  • Covered changing facilities and toilets,
  • First aid cover,
  • On course water and refreshments at the end,
  • Distinctive but sustainable UK made medal,
  • Charity donation (min £1 per runner) to Dreamflight,
  • Individual and team prizes,
  • Children’s race for children of participants

More information - This is available on the event registration page and also on the baRunner Concorde Race page, including a FAQ:  Event_Concorde.shtml

How can you help?

  • You can offer to marshal on the day - for the Kids' Race and/or for the One Hour Race either to help on the course or at the finish. Use the link to let me know you will be there,
  • However, we have chosen the course so that it needs fewer course marshals than normal and we are using chip timing to help us with the results. This isn't to say that we won't need volunteers (there is the kids' race to marshal, and for the main event we will need a back-up finish recording process) but it should be the case that anyone who wants to run should be able to do so.  Enter via the registration page: activetrainingworld (ATW).
  • Arrange to come to the club test event on Wednesday evening 13th April from 18:00. This will include a one hour run to test our processes and set some club records! And we'll probably end up in a nearby pub.
  • Pass the message on to friends and fellow runners. If you are a member of a club as well as BAAC then please consult them to find out what the club one hour records are. If they don't have one then make it clear that you will be setting one on the 13th of April, and that other club members should try to beat it or set other records at this event on the 5th June.
  • Keep me informed on any messages you pass to other groups and their response.
