Results for Next Week

Please help me by sending in your results, for instance by filling in the tables below and forwarding to News@barunner.org.uk. Some events will have "Prompts" set up in Facebook. These allow the posting of a single image and some text and make it easy to flip through everyone's entries.

Monthly Mile - please submit your May Mile performance for publication in the first August digest:

Run one mile and send me your time or add the details to the prompt in Facebook. The mile can be somebody else's formal event or even one mile within a longer run. I'll then produce a fancy graph showing your time this month compared to those of other people and previous runs over the last year:

Mile Participant Location Date How Measured Duration/Time Comment: e.g. event

Your Athletic Achievement of the Week (or use the prompt in the BAAC Facebook group):

July Mile Results

Three runners entered the pre-AGM mile at the Feltham track on 3rd July.  All three chose to park at Bedford FC and use a pedestrian route to jog to and from the track.

Road works causing Faggs Road to be closed by the Green Man had ruled out one of the normal driving options.  The showers causing interruptions at the Wimbledon tennis championships avoided the track which was encouragingly busy and being used by local groups.

Results

Chris Kelly       7:35

Stephen Taylor    8:09

Roderick Hoffman  8:35 - proof, if you need it, that longer names result in slower times.

The next running event scheduled for Bedfont is the Equinox 5km at Bedfont Lakes on Wednesday 11th September.

Steve Newell

The above times will be used for the July Club Miles unless improved upon at subsequent events. Anyone can run a measured mile and submit a time. The miles can be from races, run independently or part of other runs - but should not be in advantageous conditions (e.g. net downhill or with a strong tailwind). Note that this week's Artheusa Mile in Bushy Park has the earlier time of 19:15. This is to avoid the penalties after 20:00 (the England football game). But, if you want to get your hands on one of the low numbered original parkrun finish disks...this could be a good opportunity (even as a volunteer to hand over the disks to finishers).

Track and Field News

We have two more dates left in the calendar this summer:  The next two Wednesdays.  Are any of you available to compete?

  • The final Vets league match will be at Perivale, next Wednesday, 10th July.
  • The final Rosenheim event will be held at Woking on Wednesday, 17th July.

Please let me know if you would like to take part in either meeting.

Thanks,

Steve Hillier

Big Half 2024 - Sunday 1st September

Our club supports the London Marathon Events organisation in marshalling four events during the year.  On Sunday 1st September we have been invited to return to Greenwich.  We will be looking after the pedestrian crossing close to the end of the Big Half race at the Cutty Sark.

The day is hectic, but fun and rewarding, and gives you the best possible view of the race.

We need twenty volunteers who are prepared to give up their valuable time.  If demand is sufficient, we will lay on transport from Bedfont to Greenwich.

Please could check whether you are available for this event, and contact me as soon as possible, so that we can put together a marshalling team.

Thank you,

Steve Hillier

Julie Barclay Running 6km Dunwich, Suffolk Sun 00:32:00 A family get-together (with Jan, Vera and Olivia Jones) in Suffolk meant a gentle morning run was possible on a rarely available type of route. We ran from the house along country lanes to the cliffs at Dunwich Beach…
Paul Watt Running 6km Dunwich, Suffolk Sun 00:32:00 ...We descended the steps and continued along the beach to Dunwich Village from where we rejoined the lane back to the house. The beach is mostly shingle but if the timing is right - when the tide is not fully in - the sand is exposed and it suddenly becomes a very good running surface.

Whilst Harjit didn't make a submission this week her Facebook photo is too good not to include. Now, what is the horse thinking? The photo of Melanie is from two weeks' ago. The "Arbitrary 200th parkrun shirt" really is a thing, even if the 200 achievement isn't.

Keith Wisdom recently joined the club. This is his introduction and his first reported exercise:

"Today was a day I needed to run. Fresh air and a need to feel better. So my digs are in Brentford so a chance to run along the Thames to Kew Bridge and along the river. I am new back to running any distance. I have done loads in my youth but a back injury put paid to that. My heart also developed Atrial Fibrillation but that sent me on a direction that sorted my back out as I took up the Hammer. I did the Discus too but I tore my meniscus cartilage training for that so that got knocked on the head. Hammer is fun though. The core strength needed for this got me in the gym and that core work has protected my back. Two Heart Ablations and a few years later I am running again. 62 and now back as cabin crew after 14 years of ill health. Lost 16 kg in weight and feeling 20 years younger. Anyway back to my run today, just over 12 km. I am not pushing to break records just running again is a joy. Unexpectedly I got a PB since restarting running, for the first 10k of 1 hour 1 minute and thirty eight seconds. I eased up for the last two and a bit Km so Brentford to Kew Bridge down onto the path upstream to the bridges at Richmond and back. Easy to throw an ankle in places but otherwise a pleasant run mostly flat with great views of the river and Syon House. I got absolutely soaked on my cool down walk, British Summers! got to love them, well they made the British Grand Prix exciting."

Keith Wisdom

Welcome Keith. Note that anyone else is welcome to send me some text introducing themselves - irrespective of how long they have been a member.

parkrun Review Saturday 6th July 2024

Bushy Park MedalThe week started in Canada where parkrun has extra runs on Canada Day (1st July).  We were represented there by Roderick Hoffman (28:35) at Victoria Kitchener and David Duggan (40:19) at Whitby, both in Ontario and one each either side of Toronto.  Whitby became the 820th different parkrun for the club.

Saturday morning was a bit wet in places and that was probably the main reason for a 16% drop in UK parkrun attendances.  Northolt was reported as having the usual rainfall for the whole of July in just a few hours. The attendance at Northala Fields parkrun was down to 177 after weeks when 300 had become a typical figure.  Anxiety triggered by the General Election results or the likely fate of the England football team can hardly be blamed.

Duncan Wight (24:21) has recently rejoined our club and has immediately chalked up a new parkrun for us at Narin Beach in Co. Donegal.  His parkrun pb (18:54) was set at Fulham Palace in the early days (not the current course), he has also recorded 18:58 at Burnley.

Steve Newell (48:59) qualified for the 80+ rally at Bushy for the first time and received an unexpected medal.  Alan Anderson (211 runs at Bushy) was all set to cycle from Osterley which he did every week for years but sensibly listened to the weather forecast.

Piers Keenleyside (26:33) was in Queensland for the Gold Coast Marathon which he completed in under four hours and after warming up at South Bank parkrun in Brisbane.  Petra Otto was our trailblazing runner there in 2018.

Piers with Paul ManningWhere are they now?  An occasional check on former members……

Caroline Yarnell (24:05, 84.15%) was back in UK and ran at University Parks last month.  Still going well. Some of the Taylors and others met up with her but she is now on an airplane back down under.

A dozen years on from some spectacular performances in our sprint relay team at Rosenheim league meetings Andrew Clowes has been putting some good parkrun performances and recently recorded a pb (19:43) at Rickmansworth.  After a first run of the year at Black Park (20:17) in 2013 Andrew gave parkrun run a rest for a decade or so but is now appearing regularly at Rickmansworth where the flooding issues of last winter are still preventing the use of the regular two lap course.

Piers also reports having come across an ex BA colleague, Paul Manning (pictured), at the South Bank parkrun. Paul has been living in Queensland for the last ten years.

Matters Arising - Not a Race

Of the four I flagged last week as being "beaten" by me both Piers and Trish were faster on Saturday than my Monday run and Stephen was only a few seconds behind.

Matters Arising - Aged 80+

Despite the horrendous weather at least 71 parkrunners of age 80+ attended Bushy Park on Saturday for the annual promoted event. I say "at least" because there were 42 in total of "Unknown"s, "Other" genders with no age reported and those from an era when ages weren't recorded.
