Four Course Lunch - December Dream Mile / Retired Runners Lunch - 6th December 2018

Thanks to Neil Frediani and Steve Newell for laying on these two events last Thursday.

There were nine present for the mile including one person on their first run and Neil ran early so that he could be ready at the finish with the mulled wine and mince pies.  Conditions were OK apart from a 15 knot SW headwind.

Ian Cunningham 00:06:25
Jeremy Short 00:06:26
Ray Pepe 00:06:46 estimate
James Greaves 00:07:??
Femi Ogunfowora 00:0?:??

December Dream Mile

Then there were eleven at the Retired Runners Lunch including one former member who probably hadn't been seen at a club event for over 25 years.

I was the only person to make it to both events - I skipped the mulled wine at the mile in case I was stopped for speeding on the M4, but I didn't refuse the mince pies nor any of the courses at the One over the Ait lunch!

PS And on the subject of members from many years ago, I'm expecting two of our members from the 1990s to attend the Five Mile Handicap this Wednesday.

Christmas Club Do - Wednesday 19th December at the Bedfont Club - please respond

From 18:00 there will be the traditional Club Christmas Mile Relay and several teammates helped Steve Newell last week perfect the course that will be used from the Bedfont Club:

  • The course is flat - I ran the course five times and at the end of that my Garmin watch told me that I had climbed a total of 0 meters.
  • The course is straight, consisting of four 0.25mile straights linked by two 90degree turns and one 180degree turnaround.
  • The course is quiet, with two of the lengths being away from any road and the other two being alongside the relatively quiet Hatton Road.

Please let Steve Newell know what your estimated time will be over a mile distance so that he can plan equal teams.

>>>Steve Newell {steve-newell@blueyonder.co.uk}

From 19:30 we will have our Club Christmas Do in the Sports Bar of the Bedfont & Feltham Football and Social Club.  This will feature:

  • Food provided by the club - this has to be brought in so anticipate Christmas themed pizzas and plenty of mince pies,
  • A Secret Santa (optional - please bring a simply wrapped family audience present of value about £5 and if you put one in then you can pull one out),
  • Presentation of gifts for the first three best performances at the Five Mile Handicap,
  • A sale of unwanted club kit - including items discovered at the back of Brian's garage,
  •  Cash Bar - discounted for those members that have joined the Bedfont Club, though good value for others also.

Please, please, please tell us to expect you at the event.  We want to ensure that we order enough food. Also if you are a regular, but you are unable to make the do this year, please let us know also.

Club Awards for 2018 - please respond

Club members have produced some great performances in 2018, and we plan to celebrate them at the annual awards evening on Wednesday 27th February 2019.  Put it in your shiny new diary!

Here are some questions for every club member:

Have you been running any 10Ks in 2018?  Please can you let me have your times.  Do any performances stand out?

Would you like to nominate a club member for one of this year's awards?   Who do you think is deserving of a trophy?  Please let me know your thoughts, to help the committee come to a decision.  The categories are:

  • Male Athlete of the Year
  • Female Athlete of the Year
  • Brain Forrester 10K trophy
  • Most Improved Athlete
  • Veteran's Trophy
  • parkrun award

Thanks,

Steve Hillier

Previous years' recipients of awards can be viewed on the website here: http://www.barunner.org.uk/News_Trophies.shtml

Caroline Yarnell (23:30) has maintained her good WARR form and was first in her age group at Curl Curl in Sydney by a full five minutes.  She was running at Curl Curl for the fiftieth time.  Scott Davison (25:43) and John Coffey became the latest members to try the new parkrun at Brooklands in Weybridge.  John set a new age group record to go with one he holds at Hazelwood.  Maarten Stenham (21:25) and Paul Davis (21:39) were 2nd and 3rd respectively over the line at Hazelwood.  They have run there several times before and share a pb of 20:49.

Roderick Hoffman (30:02) achieved a rare pb (by over five minutes) when he returned to Wendover Woods for a well-coordinated rally of parkrun tourists.  The attendance was a record 222, up from the previous week's 52.  A 8.5 minute speeded-up video of the run includes footage of Roderick in a BA vest (e.g. at 6:45) and illustrates the hilly trail nature of the course https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoVhMMWnoYc

Steve Newell

Steve had made a late change to his plans to assist Alan with set-up and tail-walker duties.  He had been due to run at Clapham Common. Unfortunately for those who didn't change their plans Clapham Common was cancelled at short notice due to a health and safety issue.

Updated parkrun stats - club parkrun stats

Most Tourists

At Wendover Woods 75 of the 222 finishers, so over two thirds, had done 50 or more different parkruns. This was a planned visit and the Run Director had laid on extra marshals to cope with the anticipated numbers.  I nearly failed to find the parkrun, on a return visit, due to my incorrectly set electronic navigator leading me up a garden path. However the only true failure on the day was that the combined efforts of all of the runners and volunteers failed to consume all of the cake provided, so much had to be returned to various homes.
