Concorde Five Mile Road Race call for help

The next big club hosted event is the Concorde Five Mile Road Race on Sunday 9th June.  We need course marshals and other helpers to make this a top quality event - and it would be really good to have club runners free to race as well.  There is a Kid's Race from 10:00 and then the Five Mile Race starts at 10:30.  Helpers are needed from 09:00 (or earlier) and to help out until 13:00.  The following roles need to be filled so please email me and offer your help - telling me if you want to perform a specific role.  Note that on the day some helpers may perform more than one role.

Course Marshals : Minimum seven but up to twenty would be better.
Finish Team : Note that Laurie Kelly will be the Race Referee and he will bring with him two or three helpers - but we do need a few more.
Results : Alastair will be typing in and working out the results on the computer but we may need others to coordinate with the Finish Team
Lead Cyclist :
Tail Cyclist or runner :
Waterstation Team : A team of at least two to hand out water at the half way point
End of race refreshments team : I'm hoping that we have our usual volunteers for this.
Visitor Personal Vehicle Positioning Coordinator : Okay "Car Park Attendant"
Course Markers : One or two people to help lay out the course from 08:00 - putting out arrows and other markers over the five mile length.
Dismantlers : One or two people to collect up the arrows and markers after the event.

We will also have St Johns providing first aid cover and a Run Britain Event Adjudicator as well.

I would like anyone and everyone in the club who wants to run the race to have the opportunity to do so so, and I may regret saying this, if you want to run the race AND you can provide at least one non-Athletics Club member to help, then please enter by sending Alastair Heslop an entry form with the race fee and notify me of your helper.  I'd like the only exceptions to this to be me and Alastair.

Roderick Hoffman (Race Director) - contact me to volunteer yourself or others: roderick@rhoff.org.uk (name / contact details / role)

May Run-of-the-Month Stockley Park 10k Results

Position Name   Time Team Category Race No
52 BENNETT, Brian 00:48:31 BAAC MV70+ 213
130 MODAHER, Jasvir 00:57:45 BAAC MV50 105
133 HOFFMAN, Roderick 00:57:57 BAAC MV50 75

There were 183 finishers at this well organised local event.

Congratulations to Brian for not only thrashing the other club competitors ( ;-) ), coming first in his age category and being well ahead of the first MV60 but also for getting the Age Group record for the event.  Did they need to see your birth certificate before presenting you with your prize?

World Airline Road Race 2013 Cape Town News

The World Airline Road Race will be held in South Africa and near (rather than in) Cape Town on the weekend of 12th/13th October.  Full details haven't yet been announced and the event isn't yet open for bookings but it will happen.  The delay is due to a cycling event planned for Cape Town that weekend which has caused the host committee to have to change their plans.  We know how difficult it is to set everything up for a WARR weekend so hopefully we can be patient but keep our leave aside for that period.

Please let me know if you are anticipating going to WARR this year - it will be useful to have an indication of names and numbers.

Roderick Hoffman.

Bridges Relay Wednesday June 26th 7pm

After the disappointments of no Green Belt Relay or Round Norfolk Relay this year why not join the team for the Bridges Relay on Weds 26th June at Westminster? This relay starts at 7pm with each leg being 2.3 miles down the Thames over a couple of bridges and back. Teams are either 4 for mixed and men or 3 for ladies. We can enter as many teams as we like so let's go for a bumper turn out this year.

If you are interested please send your name to me at Richard.ruffell@ba.com.

Charity Dance

Hi Everyone,

A charity evening was held by the Athletic Club section on the 4th May in the Pavilion hall. We raised £350, to be shared evenly for the British Heart Foundation & Dreamflight. A big thank you to our club members and friends who came along, and the raffle donations given.

Let’s do it again sometime!!

Another Brilliant Marathon Day report

I can just say I ENJOYED EVERY MILE OF THE RACE. It was a fantastic and tremendous event for me and one of the best days of my life. The atmosphere was brilliant especially during the preparation time in Greenwich park. The run was perfect - without any pain, blisters or anything like that and even the next day was surprisingly fine for me and I could do my work. The crowd was amazing and gave the right push to carry on all the way long. The hardest bit was Mile 15 till 19, around Canary Wharf. But I enjoyed it.

All my THANKS belongs to the BA Team for accepting me and making it possible to join a world-famous Marathon. It was the best!

Thanks a lot and all the best. God bless - Kerstin Luksch

parkrun Results and Statistics

Last Saturday twelve BAAC parkrun family members ran at a total of nine different parkruns - perhaps a record for the number of different parkruns run by club members on a single day.  The list of parkruns visited was boosted by one with Gareth Snook doing his second parkrun this time at his home town Cardiff.  Between us we have now run at 60 different parkruns and Steve and I are currently planning on running at the inaugural "Queen Elizabeth" park parkrun just off the A3 towards Portsmouth this coming Saturday - Note that I have space in my car for more.

The following table shows the full BAAC parkrun family listed in order of the total number of parkruns run.  This shows that Alan Anderson retains and perhaps is even extending his lead being over two year's parkruns ahead of his nearest rival.  At least we can now say that the next two of us, Chris Kelly and John Coffey, have run more parkruns between them than Alan has.  In third place John  Coffey is only a whisker ahead of Joe Nolan in this list.  Ian Cunningham most recently joined the "100 Club" and Steve Newell looks like being next to achieve that.  Kerstin Luksch and myself are now well established in the "50 Club" and Piers Keenleyside could be next though Gary Rushmer and Robert Fleming could give him a sprint finish.

Graham Taylor 1 25/06/2011 Bedfont Lakes 20:48
Dave Dixon 1 11/09/2010 Finsbury Pk 36:45

But then look towards the bottom of the list.  43 family members have run more parkruns than our one and only Dave Dixon and all 47 family members have also run parkruns FASTER than Dave!  That must be a very encouraging thought to all of you...except that is if you are the one and only Dave Dixon {Ed: I checked the facts and Dave pointed out that he did start that parkrun after arriving over ten minutes late - but the rule is that whatever is in the parkrun computer must be the truth}.  Also note that eleven of the family have run fewer parkruns than Robert Brown.  Given the unlikelihood of Rob increasing his count in the near future (freedom runs don't count) those eleven family parkrunners shouldn't have much difficulty climbing the list.

Thanks as ever to Steve Newell for putting together the stats to enable such trivia.
