This Week's Events

Please help me by sending in your results, for instance by filling in the tables below and forwarding to News@barunner.org.uk. Some events will have "Prompts" set up in Facebook. These allow the posting of a single image and some text and make it easy to flip through everyone's entries.

Key Events Reminder

Last week's Special Digest covered three events the club is hosting in the next few months and included actions we want you to take:

  • The Cross Country in Tom's name on Sunday 20th March - have you told Steve Hillier to expect you as a runner or helper?
  • The Speedbird Ladies race on Wednesday 11th May - have you told Simon Turton that you are available?
  • The Concorde One Hour Race on Sunday 5th June - have you entered, and have you found out your other club's record for one hour (I want to know so that I can include it in some targeted publicity) - let me know Roderick Hoffman. A working link to the event promotional PDF is Concorde_5Jun2022.pdf (barunner.org.uk). Also please plan to join us for the practice event on the evening of Wednesday 13th April.

March Monthly Mile Results

Only four results this month - unusually not including one for myself. I've simply not had the time nor occasion.

Recent Activity Achievements

I only picked up on 13 club members and friends reporting recent activity achievements - perhaps others have been missed because I've been away or are still to submit as I go to press early.

Colleague Activity Distance Course When Duration Comments
Andy Rayner Running 4miles XC Thur 00:56:15 Very muddy.
Barry Walters Running 13km Bracknell Sun am 01:33:19 A slowish run through to Lilyhill Park and beyond. After 45 minutes I turned for home but was unable to quicken the tempo. Conditions were mild and dry.
Clara Halket "The ridge" Sat am 01:00:00 An hour's workout on the ridge this sunny morning in spring shower! Spring is here, and the army is on full-on artillery training over the fence!
David Duggan parkrun 5km Bedfont Lakes Sat am 00:33:23 Back to Bedfont Lakes parkrun for the first time since New Years Day as Eunice changed my plans. 33:23 was my best for there for 2022, & arriving at 7:50am allowed me to enjoy the beauty of the park
Harjit Jhooti parkrun 5km Sat am 00:32:18 I was with Melanie Miller on Saturday we did the same. parkrun and then hike and I got flying feet [Ed: a photo I'll have to include next week!]…
Jain Reid Walking 9.91km Richmond Park Sat pm 02:09:13 No running this week but managed another park ranger stint @ Richmond Park. I learnt that the collective noun for cormorants is a 'gulp'
Melanie Miller Hike 21.2km Oxted Circular via Westerham Sat 05:08:00 ...A wonderful hike with my two parkrun chums, a group walk with London Explorers with fantastic views. The equivalent of a Half Mara on top of Swanley Parkrun bout an hour earlier!!!
Michael Ball parkrun 5km Woking Sat am 00:28:50
Neil Frediani Running 4.5miles Up north. Sun 01:00:00 Only 2 runs this week, the second being 4.5miles in an hour today under lovely evening skies.
Petra Otto Gym Gym I only managed the gym, plus treadmill walking - 2x at 8km/5 Miles per hour, for 10 mins each. However, that pace led to lower shin pains, so I’m resting, again.
Roderick Hoffman parkrun 5km Peace Valley Sat am 00:30:18 Philadelphia. A cold front wiped out most of the US Eastern Seaboard 's parkruns from Atlanta upwards. My one went ahead, but perhaps only because me and another tourist had said we were coming! Starting and finishing was the achievement. 11 did so, plus 7 great volunteers.
Stephen Taylor Running 18miles Teddington and back Sat am 03:22:33 Continuing the EMF training with a long run down to Teddington weir and back. Not much midweek running activity though.
Steve Hillier Walking 4miles Derwent dam and Ladybower reservoir We had a good walk.

Photos next week (this digest is being kept 'lite').

This coming Saturday we have the club featured parkrun at “Homewood” which is now located at Ottershaw Memorial Fields (KT16 0NQ).  If possible we will attempt a club group photograph before the start.  As it is the nearest Saturday to St Patrick’s Day, some will find it appropriate the wear something GREEN.  It will also be 104 weeks (approx. 2 years) since the beginning of the Covid19 interruption which lasted 70 weeks, nothing much to celebrate!

Fulham FC continue their relentless drive to win the Championship title and regain Premier League status and work on the new stand and the long promised riverside path open to the public are nearing completion.  Work to the paths in Bishops Park continue and Fulham Palace parkrun remains suspended with no prospect of a resumption this side of Easter.

Persistence paid off for Benita and John Scaife (33:52) who travelled to Oxford last week and found their first choice of parkrun at Horspath had been cancelled.  Seven days on and a bright sunny morning provided a pleasant run round what is becoming regarded as a fast parkrun course with excellent facilities.

Barry Walters (27:38) was another to enjoy the better weather at Upton Court where he returned his best time and age grade since last October.
Paul Watt (22:04) and Julie Barclay (25:47) visited Beckenham Place parkrun in Southeast London for the first time.  Paul takes over the club record and Julie has the best agegrade% but the ladies club record stays with Caroline Cockram (25:33). This parkrun started in November 2016 with a two lap course based near Ravensbourne station but from the outset the plan was to move to Beckenham Place House on the other side of the railway line.  There is now a single lap course with a car park (£2 an hour) and Beckenham Junction and Beckenham Hill stations an achievable walk away.

Trish McCabe (28:41) made the long trek to Barking and set a club female record.  That run takes her total to 81 different parkrun venues and 39 of the 59 currently required for a Londone Badge.

Harjit Jhooti (32:18) and Melanie Miller (39:04) went just beyond the London boundary but stayed inside the M25 to run at Swanley (Kent) which has now been going for 19 weeks.  There are thirteen parkruns in this narrow band on the fringe and currently no member has been to all of them.

Just one new parkrun for the club collection this week. Roderick Hoffman flew to Philadelphia and ran his first parkrun in Pennsylvania at Peace Valley to the north of the city.  This parkrun started as soon as Covid restrictions were lifted last July and has an average attendance of 18 supported by 7 volunteers.  Those dreaming for a top ten finish take note!

Roderick Adds - With a storm front coming through, which wiped out most of the USA Eastern Seaboard's parkruns, numbers at Peace Valley were reduced to just 11. I had never finished with a place number between 3 and 7, and I've finished 8th four times! So my target was seventh. I started too well - revealing my inexperience at parkrun by being in the lead for the first 20 metres - but then I got the full force of the storm in my face and couldn't breathe so slipped down the positions until I could feel 8th and 9th just behind me. I plowed on (though the snow had only just started to lay) and reached the turnround point in seventh place - and had double checked by counting the runners coming towards me (there were NO "other park users" that morning). I got to the finish and they handed me the position token - number eight! I didn't have the breath to challenge them or accuse anyone of having turned early (no marshals on the course). But come the results I was there in seventh place. Obviously at some point someone has gone home with one of their early finish number tokens and they haven't seen the need to replace it. Now, I just need 3 through 6. Incidentally the other long-distance tourist who had decided that Peace Valley was the ideal parkrun to be seen at this weekend was a Russian, from Seatlle, though he was keeping quiet.

Least Impressive Run Achievement - Brixton Street-O

Indeed, the least said about my South London Street-O last week the better. The series is judged over the best five events and last week was my sixth...and doesn't feature in my top five. Move on - to the next event which is from Kings Cross on Tuesday 12th April.
