Five Mile Handicap round 3 - 12th December 2018 - Results

The December leg of the winter five mile handicap was held on a clear chilly evening at Bedfont and we welcomed two former members who migrated to California several years ago to continue their running in balmier conditions.  Paula Howard (47:06) adapted to the conditions well and navigated an unfamiliar course very successfully.  Phil Howard clutched a map in his fist all the way round but didn't refer to if often enough and gave himself some extra distance to cover.  He accepted his mistake with a good natured shrug of the shoulders as his pursuers passed him while he was out of sight.  Roderick Hoffman (48:54) continued his recent resurgence and is now nearer to his form of last winter.

The next run is scheduled for Wednesday 30th January 2019.

Christmas Club Do - Wednesday 19th December at the Bedfont Club - please respond

Currently I'm expecting the following:

Barry Walters, Clara Halket, Colin Bloomfield, Colin Haylock, Dave Barnard, Neil Frediani, Janet Smith, Paul Brandon, Piers Keenleyside, Roderick Hoffman, Simon Turton and Steve Newell.

If you are coming but not listed please let me know before I order the food on Tuesday evening. Also let me know of any partners coming!

From 18:00 there will be the traditional Club Christmas Mile Relay.  Please let Steve Newell know what your estimated time will be over a mile distance so that he can plan equal teams.

>>>Steve Newell {steve-newell@blueyonder.co.uk}

From 19:30 we will have our Club Christmas Do in the Sports Bar of the Bedfont & Feltham Football and Social Club.  This will feature:

  • Food provided by the club - this has to be brought in so anticipate Christmas themed pizzas and plenty of mince pies,
  • A Secret Santa (optional - please bring a simply wrapped family audience present of value about £5 and if you put one in then you can pull one out),
  • Presentation of gifts for the first three best performances at the Five Mile Handicap,
  • A sale of unwanted club kit - including items discovered at the back of Brian's garage,
  • Cash Bar - discounted for those members that have joined the Bedfont Club, though good value for others also.

Please, please, please tell us to expect you at the event.  We want to ensure that we order enough food. Also if you are a regular, but you are unable to make the do this year, please let us know also.

The newish run at Brooklands is continuing to attract new runners and this week Michael Ball (24:43) went back for a third run.  Maarten Stenham (26:15) ran with his son, while Paul Davis (31:41) and Kelly Davis (43:39) were there with their daughter.  Eighteen members have now run at Brooklands at least once and the early indications are that the course should prove to be enjoyable throughout the winter months ahead. Paul Timms (26:03) visited Marlborough Common parkrun which has now been going for ten weeks and this looks like being labelled as slow but pretty or perhaps pretty but slow!  Piers Keenleyside (26:43) was at Sedgefield where some of our current members have run in the distant past.  He persuaded several other extended family members to join him and failed with others.  The club total of parkruns worldwide creeps on to 459.

Alice Banks (26:39) lowered the club record at Higginson Park, Marlow.  There will be a club featured parkrun at Marlow on 19th January with Alice Banks as run director. "Run Director" appears to becoming the most popular role amongst club colleagues with three this week!

The outstanding performance of the week was achieved by Kay Trinder, 4th lady home at Woking (21:05, 82.61%).

Club Tourists

I updated the club map last week to show on it all of the parkruns that club members have run at and those that they haven't. If you click on a parkrun then further details will be shown including a hyperlink to the relevant parkrun page. The nearest run to Heathrow that no club member has run at is currently "Jersey Farm" near St Albans.  Club Event Map: [Clickable link to Google Maps] .

KLM Championships (Beach Race) 15th December 2018 Results

KLM Beach Race 10k StartThis is the race where we do not pay an entrance fee and entry includes lifts from and back to Schiphol, an entry gift and a free draw with everyone getting a prize.  Why there were only three BA runners there I don't understand - accessibility can't have been the issue since the three of us had each flown in directly from Heathrow, Gatwick and Cardiff.

The picture shows the line-up for the start of the 10k.  Note that only three competitors dared to run with bare legs and two of them were Brits! (my legs were covered). The conditions were cold and with quite a strong east wind. Twice we had to run up from the beach through the gap shown in the picture and that is where we really felt the wind in our faces. The rest of the course was a relative breeze (he lied).

6k, 73 finishers. Finishers included:

  • 1st Roberto Hofman (no relation) KLM 0:29:48
  • 43rd Segaran Ghana (having just flown in from the equator) Singapore Airlines 0:43:40
  • 71st Ralph Behrens Lufthansa 1:02:13

10k, 37 finishers including:

  •  1st Marcel van den Berg KLM 0:43:02
  • 11th Tim Bellars BA 0:50:36
  • 15th Gareth Snook BA 0:52:40
  • 34th Roderick Hoffman BA 1:06:05

Clubs Discount for Hampton Court / Kingston Races

The club has been provided with discount codes for £3 off each of the following races:

The Quickilsver Hampton Court Half Marathon on Sunday 17th February 2019.

The original Hampton Court Marathon will be celebrating its 6th year. Ideal first half marathon of the year or as part of a spring marathon schedule.

Royal Borough of Kingston Spring Raceday on Sunday 31st March 2019.

This race offers the choice of either 8 or 16 miles, following the route of the old Kingston Breakfast run which many runners will remember. The 16 has always been very popular with marathon runners as one of very few longer distance races.

Before you enter either of these two please contact Chris Kelly or Roderick Hoffman for the discount codes to be entered during the entry process.

Orienteering Result for West Hampstead on December 11th.

The previous two runs had been flat but this was a hilly one so I was glad I'd got my fitness back. Over the five miles run I climbed 128m and that was without visiting the Heath itself. My Garmin also tells me that in the 59:35 I took for the event my moving time was only 53:11. Much of the six minutes stationary was frustratingly spent waiting to cross the Finchley Road (four times in all).

Simon scored 370 points finishing in 27th place (of 55) and I scored 290 points in 44th place. The event had a low attendance consequently we scored well for the overall standings - Simon and I are 19th and 18th respectively - though I'm only ahead of Simon because I've run at four events to his three. With the best five to count Simon will overtake me in two runs' time.

Next month, on Tuesday 8th January, Street-O comes to Ealing. See http://slow.org.uk/category/streeto/ for details.
