London Marathon helper update

Following a call for help in last week’s digest I’m pleased to advise that I’ve reached the target and CANNOT ACCEPT ANY MORE HELP. With 10 weeks to go to the event this is amazing and is a big help to me, especially as this year the LM have introduced an online registration tool to better address their duty of care to volunteer helpers. I’ll send the details out to helpers on how to register in the next week.

If you’ve not been able to sign-up to help at the marathon, please consider other upcoming LM supported events; Vitality London 10000 (Mon 27 May), Standard Chartered City Race (16 Jul) and Prudential Ride London (4 Aug) which all afford helping opportunities.   And please note that when the Club Committee consider how to allocate the guaranteed entry places we get for the London Marathon we consider support given to each of these events.

Regards,

 Simon Turton

Reminder - NOW run at Northala Fields this Wednesday 20th February from 12:00

There will be a NOW (Non-office workers) run on Wednesday 20th February 2019 instead of our usual club evening. Park at either of the two free car parks at Northala Fields (see club map) and meet at the cross-paths near the loos and cafe (pictured, and where the parkrun meets up). The plan is...

  • Meet by 12:00,
  • Run on a variant of the parkrun course for 5k (with an easy opt out of the last km),
  • Drinks, food and chats at the Cafe (San Remo cafe - see photo on Facebook for menu),
  • Optional climb up the spiral mound and admire the views of London and Heathrow.

Northala Fields meeting point

Let me know to expect you, or just turn up anyway.

Speedbird Ladies Race this year - Wednesday 8th May

Please pass on the message that the Speedbird Ladies race is on Wednesday 8th May from 19:00 at the usual site on Harmondsworth Moor.  Details of the event are now on the website at http://www.barunner.org.uk/Event_Ladies.shtml, it can be entered through postal application or via Run Britain (and Active Training World will be added shortly). All of the ladies of the club are encouraged to enter and run, and all of the men are asked to volunteer as course marshals and officials (and perhaps have a 5k training run before or after the Ladies race).

The day started in Australia where David Duggan (29:02) ran at Gardiners Creek on the eastern side of Melbourne.  Club members have now visited more than 40 parkruns in Australia.  Roderick Hoffman (28:25) made a second visit to Copenhagen and this time ran at Amager Faelled, a well-established parkrun (event ID 13) soon to celebrate its 10th anniversary.  Recent joiner Finbarr Cotter has also run there (in 2016).  The club total has moved on to 472.

There was little tourism going on otherwise although notably Janet Smith (35:34) ran at Wycombe Rye for the first time and is now on 99 runs so her black vest is now only 5km away now*.  Tony Barnwell was also at Wycombe and made his 2019 parkrun debut.   Good to have him back.  Steve Newell (38:09) ventured to Jersey Farm (beyond St Albans) for a number of obscure reasons and experienced the “winter course”.  The summer course may be more attractive but will incorporate the same hills!  Janet Smith holds the club record there with 37:00.

Our faster runners may have been saving themselves for other events over the weekend.  Julie Barclay (23:59, 74.5%) put in the most impressive performance, at Rushmoor.  Joe Nolan(34:06) is showing remarkable pace control as he shaves a few seconds off his time at Black Park week after week.

The club featured parkrun planned for Black Park on 2nd March has been deferred until a later date.  The Women’s Surrey cross country league fixture postponed before Christmas has been rescheduled for that date.  The next cfp will now be at Brooklands on Saturday 13th April.

A new parkrun in our area is starting at California Country Park next Saturday 23rd March and is being promoted by Wokingham Borough Council.  It will form a triangle with established parkruns, four miles from both Bracknell and Dinton Pastures.

Updated parkrun Stats - club parkrun stats

* Janet Smith says..."My 100th is going to be on March 16th at Black Park.  I will make cake.  I had a bit of a hangover on Saturday so was slow. It was really nice to bump into Lorraine Shaw though. She is a pioneer of women's hammer throwing in this country and the first over 60m. She loves parkrun."

Inaugurals

California Country - as is usual for UK inaugurals you are asked to consider not attending unless this parkrun will be your nearest parkrun. My forecast for them is for double the number considered reasonable for an inaugural AND the team have replied to me on why they think even more might turn up (including Woodley being closed for path works). One of the Wales inaugurals I hinted at was held last Saturday at Hafan Pwllheli and attracted a massive field of all of 25 runners. You would have been most welcome at that inaugural! There will also be an inaugural run in mid-Wales on 2nd March (to be confirmed) and my forecast for them is even lower than my forecast for Hafan Pwllheli (61 rather than 70).

Roderick

Tom Rowley has brought to our attention the fact that Rushmoor parkrun will be using an alternative course on 2nd March, meeting at the Fox Lines car park. So if you plan on visiting don't be caught out.

Reason for Cancellation - too many trees on the course

Durham parkrun cancellation (actual picture)

We are used to the pavements being dug up the evening before our Concorde Five races, the Harrow Hill race often has the same issues to contend with (though not this year) and I turned up at the Ickenham 5 one year to discover that the council had planted a poppy field where the first aid tent was to be.   Last Saturday Durham parkrun had to be cancelled at short notice because a new wood had been planted across the line of the course!  A note from the land owner, Durham University, reaffirmed their intention to continue to host the parkrun and stated that they would work with the parkrun team to derive a new course - but oddly left out the word "sorry".

Street-O - Kentish Town 12th February - result

We had three runners in the Kentish Town Street-O last week. Simon took the longest time, with 25 time penalties, but scored highest with 445 net points and 26th finish, then came me with 6 time penalties and 424 points and finally Christine Munden finished within the time limit and scored 210 points, finishing in 86th place of 99 competitors.

A total of 259 people have run in the six events of the current series and in the overall table Simon is lying in 12th place, I'm in 21st and Christine is 80th (16th lady). Since Simon and I have both run the five scoring events needed for the table we will struggle to maintain our current positions with three events left.  The next event is relatively local being run around Brentford, from the Black Dog Beerhouse on Tuesday 12th March.

Harrow Hill Race BA Team & supportersSunday was a lovely day for the Harrow Hill race, run over 10k with two and a half climbs up the hill. The team, pictured, may have had more supporters than runners but club friend Stephen Norris also finished and won the V50 category.

Tom's bit

On Saturday at Rushmoor parkrun Julie Barclay was 105th in 23.59.  This month she is running to the parkruns to fit in a third one hour run each week before getting a lift home with Paul after the run.  Paul didn't run owing to a cold.

Also in the Chessington Valentines 10k today Kay Trinder ran a 0/50 PB of 41.34 finishing 1st 0/50 (63rd o/a).  Her pal Aimee ran with her and also ran a 0/40 PB.

Ian Cunningham was 120th in 47.10 and wife Janet 345th in 63.40. 423 ran.
