REMINDER Tuesday 28th January - Round-the-Block at Cranford/Heston from 12:30 #

The club has had a "Round-the-Block" race around the streets of Cranford and Heston since the early 1980s. Neil and I expect this to be the last time around the traditional course at Cranford/Heston.  The annual race once attracted 200 runners, it would be good to have 20 this time. So hopefully you will be able to join us, as a generous lunchtime break from your work locations, or from your retirement cottages.

We'll do the full lap this year, which I've GPS measured at 3.4miles/5.5k, and with the start and finish at one of the grass areas opposite the Community College. Street parking should be straightforward.  The course is shown on the club map or more clearly here (it is the same as last year). Note that we have no access to either the Heston Venue or Cranford Community College so participants will need to arrive ready to run, and return whence they came to shower and change afterwards (perhaps via the Queen's Head first, for a post race drink and meal).

Please attend and encourage your friends and colleagues to join us also.  Traditionally we charge £1 for participation in this event and this is donated to White Lodge.

Non-runners also welcome. Let us know to expect you by emailing us or responding to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1196283790762498/

Club Coaching Session - Wednesday 5th February from 6pm at the Bedfont Club

Joe Nolan will be leading a coaching session on the 5th February at the Bedfont Club. This is being targeted for the longer distance runner, but anyone is welcome to turn up and see what they can learn. The exact format is to be confirmed but it is likely to involve a warm-up from 18:00 followed by the coaching session up to 19:15 and then a discussion in the bar from 19:30.

Weekend CancellationsLet me know if your result doesn't feature in the table above - I know that there were issues at Bedfont Lakes where a scanner failed before its data could be uploaded and results data had to be manually supplied and updated after I made the main results extract.

Several cancellations last weekend due to the cold and wet (but not at Presint 18 in Malaysia!). London lost Brooklands and Sunny Hill to Ice and a band of water related cancellations across the Chilterns. The map extract shows official cancellations (others cancelled, but didn't update the parkrun list). Click on the map to see the cancellations across the whole country.

James Shoulder was first finisher at Bedfont Lakes for the second time. James has finished in all the top places from first to ninth but never tenth. We have several runners who have finished in all the places from second to tenth but never first finisher - Barry Walters, Ben Chaytow (2nd to 36th), Chris Kelly (2nd to 47th), Maartin Stenham (2nd to 39th), Murrey Hogge (2nd to 42nd), Richard Ruffell (2nd to 29th). Speaking as someone who has a first finish to their credit you sometimes need to carefully decide which parkrun to do! Gary Rushmer has all the places from 1st to 16th. Jeremy Short has 1st to 10th but needs an 11th place, Mike Dennison also has all from 1st to 26th (some before joining us so not in our database). It is difficult for our ladies to feature in this - though Maria Jovani is close, needing a 1st and 3rd to complete all places down to 46th.

Running Badgesparkrun in the Netherlands

You don't have to travel to the far east to add another flag to your parkrun adventures. It is now confirmed that parkrun Netherlands will start on Saturday 29th February. It is expected that there will be around five parkruns initiating on that date but the details haven't yet been released though may have been by this time tomorrow. If you are keen to avoid being in the UK on 29th February then check: https://blog.parkrun.com/nl/category/nieuws/ .

If you want to see your parkrun badges then install the Running Challenges Chrome Extension - for details see https://running-challenges.co.uk/.

Street-O Wimbledon Results

Simon says "The choice was west for the hills of Wimbledon Village or east where it was bit flatter. Most of us went west for the points." to which Chris replied "Yes, I knew there was a hill from the Prudential Ride London, and I drove in from that side, but I don’t think I realised that was what the brown lines {on the map} were indicating until Simon pointed it out – Der!"

The results show that our three runners all finished without time penalties (clearly I wasn't there!). There was a large turnout for this run, over 100, and the points scoring system used means that all those towards the bottom of the table hardly scored any points towards the series table.

Overall Pos. Women Pos. Name M / W Score Time Time Penalty Grand Total Points
1 ... M 780 00:59:55 0 780 100
20 Simon Turton M 510 00:59:09 0 510 81
23 1 ... W 500 00:59:53 0 500 78
55 Chris Kelly M 370 00:58:42 0 370 46
97 31 Jain Reid W 210 00:59:14 0 210 4

In the series table Simon had now overtaken me and is lying in 25th place with 246 points from three events. I've in 30th place with 220 from 4 events. Chris Kelly and Jain Reid feature in 73rd and 75th place though are still edged by Christine Munden in 53rd.

The next event will be at the Angel Islington on Tuesday 11th February, meeting at the Three Johns at 73 White Lion Street, N1 9PF, from 18:15. http://londonorienteering.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/StreetO_Angel_Islington_feb2020_flyer.pdf

Adrian in the Sussex MastersAdrian Haines in the Sussex Masters on Sunday

Finished 4th - "Too far behind the leading three, but plenty of distance from the following pack. This is the best cross country course in Sussex. With all the rain it was smooth running. The two long hills on the camber were testing. The views were unbelievable. Highly recommended for walking from oombes Farm. Great to be back racing after a testing month"
