June Monthly Mile Results

I have the four results for June, though I suspect I've missed someone.

Mike reports that he has already run three of the Arethusa mile series in Bushy Park during June - 1st June in 5:32 (equalling his PB), then 5:43 on 8 June and 5:37 on 15 June, in varying weather conditions!

Monopoly Event Wednesday 22nd June from 18:00 + social with food

A reminder of this Wednesday's run or walk at the Bedfont Club.  We hope to see you there at 6pm for a fun evening, collecting Monopoly properties and hotels, before returning to the club for food.

Will you be a battleship?  Can you win Trafalgar? (Square)

Entries and marshals welcome on the night, but it would be helpful if you can give us advance warning that you're coming.

Thanks,

Steve and Linda Hillier

Track & Field 2022 – Matches Two – yet more records fall!

Once again, our T&F competitors had a busy week, as Vets and Rosenheim League fixtures fell two days apart.

In contrast to previous years, the event at Uxbridge was warm and dry.  We packed three running events across several age groups, with Jacqui winning her heat of the 200m.  Adrian made a welcome return, finishing a close second in the 200m and 800m, the later in a club record time.  Fiona expanded her collection of club records, with a fine second place in the 3000m as the sun set.

Two days later, the action moved to south London and the pretty Ewell track.  Mike continued his strong week of sprints with a double in the 100m and 200m, while Steve achieved his best javelin throw in a few years. The evening closed with Paul breaking the third club record of the week, with a storming 1500m.

Recent Activity Achievements

I only picked up on 13 club members and friends reporting recent activity achievements this week, but I could have added others from the Track & Field matches and German parkrun report - and I know that some will have been caught out by the early digest including Stephen Taylor who I know had been out this morning since I met him on my run. Next week's may be a bumper issue!

Colleague Activity Distance Course When Duration Comments
Adrian Haines Cycling 96.74km Bordeaux Wed 04:21:00 Bordeaux airport to the running camp.
Barry Walters Gym Bracknell Sun am 01:00:00 Just a one-hour workout in the gym this morning.
Benita Scaife Running 4miles High Rock Park, NY Tue 00:45:00 There isn’t much that’s free in New York, but two of the few are running in NY State Parks, and the Staten Island ferry. Accordingly, we set off across the harbour this morning…
John Scaife Running 4miles High Rock Park, NY Tue 00:45:00 ...caught the Staten Island Railroad (not free, but only $2.75 a go) and ran in High Rock Park in the centre of the island. We have now run in parks in 4 of the 5 boroughs, so we have to find a park in Queens next.
David Duggan parkrun 5km Severn Bridge Sat am 00:32:06 Memorable morning at Severn Bridge parkrun. Garmin had no charge so running "naked" for 32:06 - plus a milestone reached [500th volunteer - see also news | Severn Bridge parkrun]
Fiona Bishop Track Hillingdon Vets League Mon 200m, 800m and 3000m.
Graham Taylor parkrun 5km Alstervorland Sat am In Germany at the weekend we (with Mark and John) realised that there was a parkrun nearby, less than 5km from our hotel, we thought it would be rude not to. For the older club runners you will probably recognise the other runner in the picture, Ralph Behrens from Lufthansa.
Jacqui Haines Track Hillingdon Vets League Mon Our ladies' team last night at the vets League at Hillingdon. Sunshine and endorphins! A 200 and 800 for me. Great to be back on ‘track’!
Joe Nolan  Race 5km Langley Park 5k Summer Series Wed 00:32:23
Mike Dennison Running 25.1km Bushy / Richmond Mon am 02:05:48 A nice 25km run on Monday morning. Quite nice running conditions, and nice to return to do almost a lap of Richmond Park, having not been up there for quite a while!
Piers Keenleyside Running 5miles Headstone Manor Sun 00:41:47 I took part in the 'Summer League' with Ealing Eagles at the event hosted by Metros. As with last week's Osterley 10K I ran quicker, by over a minute, in the first 5 miles in the Stockholm Marathon a couple of weeks ago!
Roderick Hoffman  Race 5km Langley Park 5k Summer Series Wed 00:31:20 Nice to do a minute faster despite the conditions being hotter - that is the benefit of knowing the ups and downs of the course and so knowing when to save energy and when to push.
Steve Hillier Cycling 15miles From Hillingdon Sat My cycling loop was completed in 15 miles today, including Hillingdon, Yeading, the Grand Union Canal and Northolt. [This included stopping by my place to get the keys for Wednesday!]

Week achievement photos

Ed: Late submissions from Emma Moreton (her Saturday parkrun, see below) and Melanie Miller (18.3km hike in Italy with 2miles of climb in 35degrees heat).

[*] See comment below.

The nearest Saturday to the Longest Day threatened to be hot and humid but wasn’t too uncomfortable for most, especially if tree cover was a feature of the chosen course.  Some may have even experienced a few spots of rain.

The Taylor brothers, not unfamiliar with running overseas many times over the years, made their debut at a foreign parkrun with a trip to Hamburg, host of WARR 1989, now the home of Alstervorland parkrun.  John (20:29) came in 5th (club male record) , Mark (21:41, 11th) and Graham (30:55, 35th) of 52 finishers.  Old Warrior Ralph Behrens (LH) was there as well completing the flat and pretty lakeside course and taking photographs.  It was not a new parkrun for the club as Petra Otto ran there almost exactly three years ago.

Others to try a new parkrun (for them) were Ian Cunningham (22:06) at Sutcliffe Park Nature Reserve in Southeast London, Denis Foxley (29:12) at Wimbledon Common, Sarah Gordon (33:43) at Northala Fields, David Duggan (32:06) at Severn Bridge and Trish McCabe (28:39) at Wycombe Rye.

A reminder that the next “club featured parkrun” (2nd July) will be at the recently started Church Mead parkrun which starts and finishes by a stream at the bottom of a hill in Old Amersham (Bucks).  The course is over two laps of rural footpaths, partly in the open and partly through a wooded section, oh, and yes, there is a hill involved, in fact quite a challenging one.  On good days, it is possible to reach Amersham on the London Underground (Metropolitan Line, zone 9), the station is at the top of the hill.  Free street parking is limited in Old Amersham but there is a RingGo car park very close to the start/finish area.

[*] Recent members for whom it hasn't been confirmed they have re-joined this year are marked thus [*]. Note that the supply of information from the bank account is problematical so it could be that some of you have already paid your subs, but the information has either got lost or hasn't filtered through yet. Please let me know if you have been flagged but consider yourself to be a fully paid-up member. On the other hand if you don't intend to renew please drop membership secretary > Alan Friar a polite note to say so, so that he knows not to chase you.

Each week Steve and I have to decide which, if any, non-members to include in the report. We try to show those that fulfil club members' interests. Joan Foxley is always included since she reliably reminds us of Denis' time or duty. Anne Anderson is included since it is Alan Anderson who gets her round (but too hot this week for the two of them). Jakob Stenham is included; he is too young to be a member of the club, but his mother is a non-running member. At Northala Fields this week I included my sister Charlotte since she was attending with me and our other sister Sarah and doing her 100th parkrun. Charlotte was a member of the club when she was UK based and is a frequent attender at WARR, including for this year's event in Hawaii. But I didn't list my brother-in-law who also walked the course. Also I didn't list Marion (Stephen) Taylor who also ran at Northala Fields this week. But I did list Jonathon Horan who isn't related to any member but was the winner of the Concorde One Hour event the other week. Like I say, Steve and I make the judgment each week on which non-members to include and your feedback on this topic is always welcome.

Following Kevin Holland's experience, I'm looking into whether I can make available all members' barcodes through the baRunner website, so that anyone who is in that situation can more easily get anyone else with a smartphone to be able to display their barcode for them. It is possible...but needs a bit more work yet.

Letters to the Editor

Yesterday evening we went on a three-hour Jazz cruise from Chiswick Pier to Westminster and back.

Guy De Bousac was on board with his wife who asked whether I used to run to work from Chiswick to Ruislip which Guy did at one time. I explained that Ray Dickerson and I shared a car pool and sometimes drove home with clothes while the other ran (we lived in the same street). Guy was assigned to IM at one stage when his ex "BEA" department got wound up. He moved to IATA not much later.
