Hi Friends,

On behalf of the SAA Athletics Club, I would like to thank all of you for being part of this year's WARR. Your presence on our shores was felt, and for that we are very appreciative. To all the friends we met this year and previous years, please don't change. Your individual personalities and leadership roles have played big roles in fostering relationships, not only between athletes, but also between airlines. You have managed to accomplish the main goal of the World Airline Road Race.

If any of you happen to be back in SA, please don't hesitate to contact me on MfihlelwaZwane@flysaa.com or on my personal email Clement847@gmail.com. If you want to invite us to any races happening in your part of the world, please feel free to do so. I would like to invite you to the Two Oceans Ultramarathon that runs annually in Cape Town over the Easter weekend. If you are brave enough, you may enter the 56km run, or do the 21km run. For details on this race, go to www.twooceansmarathon.org.za and see what it's all about.

I could never say thank you enough times. Keep the flag of your airline up, and keep running!

Warm Regards,

Johnny Zwane | Captain | SAA Athletics Club

Club family parkrun results and stats for 19th October 2013

Only nine family runs this weekend - low due to the Surrey League Cross Country.

Congratulations to Kerstin Luksch.  Every parkrun has a points competition each year and the Gunnersbury year has just completed.  I note that this year with my wonderings I've scored a solitary point at Gunnersbury.  Kerstin on the other hand has been loyal and consistent and has accumulated a grand total of 3639 points to win the ladies competition by about 20%.  Trophies are to be presented this Saturday - and the evidence suggests that Kerstin will be there to receive it.

I joined my sister at Cambridge parkrun but I wasn't the only wonderer this week - Steve Newell went to the inaugural run at Fulham Palace parkrun. Steve describes this course as being very flat with a few sharp corners and a very good tarmac surface other than for the last 40 metres on grass.  Cambridge was a good course also but most of us would only do it if passing nearby.  Between us club members have now run at 75 different parkruns.  Steve and I are starting to think of a push towards the one hundred.

Finally one day we are going to have a really tight club battle over 5k - on Saturday my time was 24:56, Tony Hird was 24:55 and Joe Nolan ran a slow (for him) 25:01- all at different parkruns but if we get together and with Neil Frediani it could be a very interesting race!

Steve's parkrun stats

Yorkshire Marathon 2013

As you know I was running in the Yorkshire Marathon yesterday which took place in and around York.

It was a very flat course - but unfortunately I found myself unable to take advantage of this and ended up with a disappointing time of 3:28:53. I was on target for sub-3:20 at half-way which I got to in around 1:37 but I slowed rather too much in the last 6 miles. On the plus side at least it was sub 3:30 AND I beat my younger (by 8 years) brother who was running his first marathon - he finished in 4:24.

I'm running in Toulouse next weekend but think I good time there is not really on being only a week after this one in York.

STOP PRESS - World Masters Outdoor Championships

Adrian Haynes, representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland, made the final of the 800 metres but was only* able to finish seventh (of 11) in a time of 2:05:13.

* So this means that Adrian is only the seventh fastest Master in the world.

Photo Caption Competition

Look again at that photo above of Simon of BA and Mark of Woking AC taken at the Surrey League Cross Country event on Saturday.  Look at the hands, look at the expressions, who is saying what to who?

News for the next BAAC News Digest? I also need a club running related photograph every week so help me out here.

Please let us have your ideas for how club communications can be improved and please send us items for inclusion in the next Digest.  Results, news, feedback, jokes, stories - send it to us at news@barunner.org,uk.  You can copy Paul Brandon and Roderick Hoffman in BUT the news@ address is the one that we use when the digest is compiled.
