Burnham Beeches NOW photoNOW Burnham Beeches Wednesday 19th May Report

Last Wednesday at least 13 of us met at lunchtime in the Burnham Beeches carpark for the Non-Office Workers event around the woodland. The Scaifes led the joggers amongst us with a rough idea of a 5k loop for us to cover but on the day we went a different way though still arrived back at the cafe as our watches clicked on "5". We re-met the walkers at the cafe but had to then follow social distancing rules to be split between three, or was it four, tables.

Alice Banks has offered to host another NOW event for the lunchtime of Wednesday 16th June and will consider options in or around Maidenhead that include a scenic run or walk, and a cafe for lunch.

Other ideas welcome - to > Steve Newell please.

SOLO Activity Achievements, Weekend 21st to 24th May 2021

24 results recorded below, including a couple stolen from Facebook rather than submitted. But I wasn't going to miss out on including the pictures.

Colleague Activity Distance Course Start Time Duration Comments
Amanda Coombs Open water swim 2.18km Shepperton Sat am 00:44:35 Water temperature - 15 degrees
Andy Rayner Running 4miles Local XC Thur 00:54:30 Post injury, gusty conditions and muddy. Also 3miles on Saturday in 44:30.
Barry Walters Running 13km Chavey Down Sat am 01:14:35 Found this effort quite tough and seemed to run out of energy during the second half. Conditions were good with light winds.
Benita Scaife Running 4miles Shoppenhangers route Sat 00:42:06
Caroline Yarnell  Race 5k Eastern Beaches (NSW, Oz) Sat State cross-country race at the Eastern Beaches. I was 2nd in my age group yet again - always the Bridesmaid. Afterwards we spotted whales near Coogee after our fish and chips.
Clara Halket Running 10.23km Army trails Sun pm 00:51:31 Blustery threshold run on the army trails. Maybe the winds pushed me down the decent, maybe the military live firing spurred me on, not log this fast for a very long time!
Denis Foxley Running 10km Ruislip Woods and Lido Sun am 01:05:00 A chilly run and with a return of the mud after last week’s rain.
Emma Moreton Running 5km (not)parkrun Sat 00:24:16 ...before heading off to hot yoga back in the studio!
Ian Haylock Running 1mile Bushy Park In week 00:05:55 Two seconds slower than his mile the previous week (when chased by me).
Jain Reid Running 14.69km To/From Richmond Park Sat 01:41:24 A run before my 2nd covid jab
Janet Smith  Hammer Thames Valley Athletics Centre (Eton) Sat I haven't trained on a Saturday for a while so was nice to be out with the group. Also, it didn't rain.

John Scaife Running 4miles Shoppenhangers route Sat 00:42:06 We stopped to talk to our son Andrew whose house we pass on the route, but still recorded a decent time. We call it 4 miles but I suspect it’s a fraction short so we must Strava it one day.
Julie Barclay  Race 10km Dorney Lake Sat 00:45:05 Race - Dorney Lake Series and fastest time since WARR 2019
Michael Ball Sprints Track  3x150 4min rest between runs then 10 min rest and 1x200 and gym.

Paul Watt  Race 5k Dorney Lake Sat 00:19:24 Race - Dorney Lake Series (and another PB).
Roderick Hoffman Orienteering 9km Maidenhead North Sat 01:00:45 Orienteering event from Oaken Grove Park.
Simon Turton Orienteering 9.37km Hambleden Sun 01:11:36 I've run 'proper' orienteering for the last weekends... but forgotten to report for the digest! Today's run had just one navigational error that cost me a couple of minutes. Stingers were rather high though (ouch).
Stephen Taylor Running 13.15miles Ealing Sat am 02:23:22 A more gentle run this weekend catching up with friends.
Steve Hillier Sprints 2km Local Sat 8 x 250m. Also 20km cycle on Sunday including Red Kite spotting near Northolt Aerodrome.
Tim Bellars Walking 10miles "Green" listed Portugal Sat See below

Weekend Achievements

Tim Bellars adds:

After last weekend’s exertions of a 11 miler and 10 miler for the virtual Greenbelt Relay, I swopped my running shoes for hiking boots!

Nance and I took full advantage of the travel corridor to Portugal and boarded a plane for Lisbon last Wednesday. After an initial two days in Lisbon which was wonderful (especially 82 degrees!) we headed for Sintra which is I little inland but in the hills. Saturday saw us do a ten mile hike around the hills taking in the castle and royal palace which are both set on their individual peaks. Absolutely breathtaking and reminded me of the last marathon I ran in fairytale Bavaria. Fortunately the weather had cooled down and whilst it was a challenging walk it was lovely. I would recommend this place. We have now headed up to Porto for a few days before heading back to Lisbon for our flight home. Next weekend’s activities may well include surfing in Nazaré! (Goggle it)

Cheers Tim

BA Athletics Club Records - The Javelin

How far can you throw a pointed stick?  This is another one of the events taking place at the Veterans match on 7th June at Uxbridge and you can see in the records that it is the Vets league that has been the spur for new records recently.

To qualify as a record the event has to be competitive and accurately measured and the participant has to be a paid-up member of the club and wearing a club vest (or in an in-house organised event). Members for whom BA is a second claim club may need permission from their first claim club for them to jump in a BA vest and claim the record (so the same performance cannot be claimed by two different clubs).

* Harry and Alan have been fighting it out to set Javelin records in the older categories. It is currently two all. Overall Harry holds 11 club records, ten for throwing but also the MV80 100m record. Alan holds 10 overall with the MV75 Long Jump being his only other field record - the rest are for distances from 100metres to 10km.

** According to the Round-the-Block report Tim Clark was inspired in part by having Barry McKenna running across his path in the long jump, taking place simultaneously. Although Tim's record throw was only good for fourth place in the competition it helped make the difference - hosts Lufthansa finished well ahead but BA edged Finnair for second place by a single point, and with Swissair a further point behind.

parkrun update

With ten US parkruns restarting last week there was a new recent record of 541 parkruns worldwide. The UK restart date has been pushed back to Saturday 26th June and whilst it is disappointing to have it pushed back this date is looking far more realistic with those declaring as able to restart on that date now including Bushy Park and the National Trust properties including Osterley. As of last Friday 315 English parkruns (out of about 567) have agreement to restart on 26th June and more will be added to the list this week.
