A good club turn out for Brian's birthday bash last week - and we weren't just there for the sausage sandwiches. {Ed: I've had no write-up for the event held beforehand so no one will get to hear how I out-sprinted John Coffey across the far side of the field}

First Cross Countries of the season at Lightwater Country Park on Saturday 19th October

All runners welcome - these are team events so that even the team member finishing in last points scoring position contributes to the team's total achievement.

Ladies starts at 12:00 - details from Clara Halket            Mens starts at 15:00 - details from Gary Rushmer

Gary says "Let's start the season with a good turnout. Good training for a spring marathon as well. Trust me"

London Marathon Entries - The results of the entry ballot are in...

Many of you may have been looking forward to pounding the streets of London next Spring. Should your application to run in the London Marathon have been unsuccessful, there might still be a chance......

The BA Athletics Club provides the London Marathon with over one hundred marshals and in return they provide us with some additional places that we can allocate to our members. Therefore we have a limited number of places to allocate. The decision as to who will be allocated places will be taken by the BA Athletics Club committee and will take into account the following criteria. These are listed roughly in priority order but note that other criteria and information may be taken into account when the decision is made:

  • Those who have helped BAAC marshalling in previous years and been unsuccessful in the ballot,
  • BA Athletics Club members who regularly take part and support club events,
  • People who have been unsuccessful through the ballot,
  • Paid up BA Athletics Club members,
  • Family or Friends of people who meet the criteria above.

If you want to be considered for a place, think about which of those categories apply to you and then contact me on stevehillier@msn.com

Anyone offered and accepting a club space will be expected to pay the normal entry fee for the Marathon and to provide a minimum of two marshals to assist with the 2014 London Marathon. The marshalling work required will be described nearer the time.

Club family parkrun results and stats for 28th September 2013

Not enough space in the digest for a table this week but full details are in Steve's parkrun stats sheets.  Twelve family members ran at seven different parkruns. Roderick knocked 286 seconds off his time at Havant but it had been a very slow time when previously run last December.  Gary Rushmer got the fastest time with 20:50 at Bedfont Lakes.  Also at Bedfont Neil Frediani achieved a parkrun PB of 24:46 whilst at Guildford Monica Alonso was joined by Helen Smith making a return to parkrun - training for WARR perhaps.  Our fastest lady was Kerstin Luksch at Gunnersbury who finished in 25:50 (the same time as Roderick) whilst warming up for the Ealing Half the next day.  Steve Newell ran at Osterley - his 21st different parkrun venue.

Steve Newell has already earned his 100 shirt but hopes to be presented with it at Gunnersbury on 5th October. That event will also be the 100th run of Gunnersbury so could be a good one to add to your personal diaries.

Steve Newell

I was trying to keep with the 1:30:00 pacers but after 6 miles they pulled away as I found myself slipping down the field whenever we had to run up a hill - which was more often than you might think! I must make sure I include a weekly session of hill training in my schedule! Still I did my best time this millenia since clocking 1:30:23 at Hillingdon in 1999.

BA Clubs AGM Thursday 25th September - Key highlights bar one

Some highlights from the BA Clubs London Club AGM, Thursday 26th September, 2013
  • Most crucial AGM in a generation
  • Club upgrading on the past year included: Gladstone membership system, wifi upgrade, New Windows (glass or Microsoft?? this wasn't made transparent), Squash court lighting
  • BA have withdrawn their annual subsidy, leading to cost savings/redundancies in BA Clubs Admin.  We are currently "Tenants at will" and presently tenancy could be withdrawn by BA without notice.
  • Gatwick Wingspan Clubhouse has closed with the assets being sold off.  The Concorde Club bought the leather chairs but somehow these are now in a BA T5 lounge!
  • BA Clubs membership continues steady decline down to 13,500 members (active and sleeping).
  • Costs under control, but gap between costs and revenues have widened again.
  • New relationship with BA requires change with the Concorde Club Ltd to be set up as a charity, Concorde Club Trading Ltd as the commercial arm donating income to the Charity, plus linked holding organisation for regional clubs.
  • Commercial agreement would be with Leisure Connections - they are involved in the public and private sector (e.g. BP).
  • BA would provide a lease at the Concorde Centre for 12 years.
  • QPR Academy contracted to stay until late 2014 - thanks to Sections for their co-operation - the finances would have appeared much worse without this.
  • Project Janus - Concorde Centre would have improved gym, changing rooms, squash courts, and introduce a 5-a-side facility. Gym target is membership up from 300 to 1300 in a state of the art 67 station facility, but with no pool/sauna.
  • Project Janus predicts turning an annual loss of £50K into an annual profit of £150K.
  • Charity status would cut rates by £70K. We would be a charity by dint of providing sporting and social activities to the public.
  • Club would be open to membership of the general public. BA members would get a membership discount.
  • Section facilities would be ring fenced with no time limit, but they would need to be well utilised.
  • Timescale: Lease arranged by end of year. Construction to start in early Spring.

The meeting approved the changes to the governance of the Club by 111 votes to nil with one abstention.  There will be a full members meeting on November 7th.
