Monthly Mile Results - September

Just two results this month - Mike and Ian, both having run their best times of the month at the Arethusa Mile on 6th September. They both also ran on the last run of this year on 29th September when, apparently, a new course had to be derived at the last minute due to deer facing off on the regular course. There was also a strong headwind on the return half of the new course out-and-back mile. Ian's time was only 1second slower than his best of the month but Mike still beat him by 3 seconds. The next Arethusa Mile will be on Wednesday 1st May 2024. Hopefully the club will have a few mile entries from other events and runs over October.

Rickmansworth parkrun CFp 7th October 2023 #

This week we are having a club featured parkrun at Rickmansworth Aquadrome.

The venue at Frogmore Lane off Harefield Road is well served by both rail and road (M25, jct 17), nearest Post code is WD3 1NF.  There is a large free carpark approached via a humpback bridge (take care) which can get quite full and large puddles are a feature on wet days! If attending please assemble by 08:50 for a team photo and wear a club vest.

The picturesque parkrun course is over two flat clockwise laps with views of Bury Lake and Batchworth Lake and a woodland section by the River Colne.

There is a good café within yards of the finish,  Early finishers should get in the queue rather than wait for the tail-enders to finish!

Please let Steve Newell know if you are planning to come along.

parkrun Review 30th September 2023

Julie Barclay (23:45, 80.86%) produced an eye catching performance on her first visit to Wanstead Flats in North East London.  That run puts her top in her age group there by almost a whole minute.  That parkrun has been going since 2011 and Julie tops a list of 138 names.  Paul Watt (20:50) lowered the club men's record there (previously held by Richard Ruffell).

The list of parkruns visited by at least one member continues to grow at a spectacular rate and there now seems a possibility that as many as a hundred new venues may be added in just one year.  We ended 2022 with a total of just under 700.  After adding four more this week alone we are already up to 768 with another three months still to go.

Working through the time zones, Mike Dennison (20:31, 3rd man) and Maria Jovani (21:41, 2nd lady) were at Rheinpark (Cologne), West Germany.  They were followed by Melanie Miller (38:17) at Waterakkers (Teteringen, Netherlands).  Over to UK (into the last few weeks of BST) Piers Keenleyside (26:55) clocked in at King George V Playing Field (Cheltenham).  There are dozens, if not hundreds, of KGV fields in UK and the colonies so well done Cheltenham.  Then a gap of a few hours until Roderick Hoffman (29:12) ran at Riverside, Kamloops in British Columbia.

Where are they now?

Former member Caroline Yarnell was in UK during the summer and ran three times at Chester parkrun.  Since returning to Sydney she has appeared once at Curl Curl (23:36, 84.6%).  She is on 96 runs.  For her Summer is just round the corner.  From the same era, Mike Lawrence is also on 96, half of them at Gunnersbury (best time this year 22:28) while Bill Byrne (M3, 26:18) is up to 187 and was at Merrymeeting Dog parkrun, Maine, USA this week. Now back with Sheen Shufflers.

Matters Arising

Following Petra's genuine 59:59 result last week I checked the club database and I see that two club members have also had 59:59 results:

  • Sarah Gordon at Nostell parkrun on 1st January 2018 where all 703 finishers were given the time of 59:59 (an example of why the New York double is no longer permitted),
  • and Richard Ruffell (when a member) on 26th October 2013 at St Albans where all 253 finishers were given the 59:59 result.

Those two are not the only missing results of club members. For example I ran Grovelands on 25th August 2012 and although results were published they only showed one "Unknown" finisher with no time. That was within my initial run of 50 different parkruns so I then had to avoid Grovelands parkrun until my run #52 just in case the missing results turned up.

Riverside, Kamloops has been my second "Riverside" parkrun. I've got seven more to do to complete the set - Prudhoe Riverside parkrun, Riverside parkrun, Rocks Riverside parkrun (au), Exeter Riverside parkrun, Woodbridge Riverside parkrun (au), Ury Riverside parkrun, Riverside Park parkrun (us), "Riverside parkrun, Grand Rapids" (us), "Riverside parkrun, Kamloops" (ca). I'm in no hurry. There are also three "Riverbanks" one "Riverfront" and one Riverway.
