Christmas is Coming - This month's Club in-house events

Now that we are into December there is no doubt that Christmas is heading our way and is to be enjoyed. We have club events every week of December:

  • This week - NOW event at Osterley on Thursday from 12:00. Meet in front of Osterley House and join in a ~5k social jog or a ~3k walk. We'll then have hot drinks and/or food in the National Trust Cafe. Let us know not to set off without you: > Roderick Hoffman
  • Wednesday 13th December - Bedfont Club December Handicap - set off from the Bedfont Club in Hatton Road to complete the two-lap circuit (running, 5 miles) or one-lap (walking, 2.5miles) to finish at 7pm. Changing rooms available and join us for food in the club house afterwards.
  • Wednesday 20th December - Our Xmas Do at the Bedfont Club. If we follow tradition then this will consist of...
  • A mile relay event organised by Steve Newell. This will cater for all speeds. Changing rooms available afterwards.
  • Food provided by the club and by members - if you wish to bring something then tell > Steve Hillier what you will be bringing. He will then order other food in to ensure that we have a good spread. Pay bar available.
  • Secret Santa (optional) - Bring a wrapped present with value up to £5 and then select a random present from Santa's sack.
  • We've never had to resort to having a Club Christmas Sing-along...may the tradition continue.
  • Thursday 28th December - Round Heathrow Run - Start at the Bedfont Club and run in a group all of the way round the mapped trail following parks, paths and minor roads for the 12-mile loop, or do part of this and get the bus home, for instance from Harmondsworth.

Petra Otto Monitoring Westpark parkrun, Munich Sat am Keeping up with the news "Despite several inches of snow overnight, Westpark Parkrun in Munich went ahead." I used to love running in the snow. Stitches on finger removed, part of which has become numb. Seeing my surgeon next Monday. Hamstring improved by about 10%.

Steve Hillier Cycling 26km Hillingdon 01:53:00 Circuit of Hillingdon and Yeading, with a brief stop in Tesco to top up much needed supplies.  It was cold, but the canal hadn't quite frozen.

parkrun Review 2nd December 2023

The county focus this week moves round to Bedfordshire, with Hertfordshire to follow next week.

Bedfordshire is not universally regarded as a “home county” as it has no border with London and for most members it is fairly remote even if well served by the M1 motorway. There are only seven parkruns – from North to South – Bedford, Great Denham, Millennium Country, Henlow Bridge Lakes, Houghton Hall, Luton Wardown and Dunstable Downs – a National Trust venue 40 miles by road from the club HQ at Bedfont and which could be a suitable candidate for the club featured parkrun.

This week wintry weather interfered with UK parkrunners’ plans for their Saturday morning and several hundred runs were cancelled although most of the runs in the London area did go ahead with an “extra layer” being worn by many.

Our fast runners were running fast.  Mike Dennison (19:32) and Marai Jovani (19:41) decided it was the week to visit Dulwich Park with its speedy reputation.  There was no shortage of pacemakers with over 50 men and four women completing the 5k in under 19 minutes and indeed almost 100 in under 20 minutes. Mike’s time places him 5th out of over 300 in his age group there. For Maria, 16th out of 1299!  At the much bigger Bushy parkrun there were only 27 runners under 19 minutes.

Our two runners under 19 minutes this week both finished their runs in 18:58. David Cowell (4th place) achieved a course pb at Rushcliffe (Nottingham) where he has run 5 of his 88 parkruns, while Adrian Haines came 5th at Tilgate where he has run 40 of his 90 parkruns. A dead heat of sorts, but they were 170 miles apart!

Paul Watt (19:54) and Julie Barclay (22:25) visited Valentines parkrun (Ilford) for probably the only time in their lives and are creeping closer to complete the “Londone” challenge.  If Chris Kelly is harbouring ambitions to complete the alphabet challenge it is a “V” run to keep in mind.  He nailed his “Q” this week at Queen Elizabeth – time unimportant.

There was no inaugural for a UK parkrun again this week, it is a full month now, maybe there won’t be any more this year.  They can happen in mid-winter – Stockley Country got going in early January and will be celebrating the first anniversary on Saturday 6th January 2024.

A notable addition to the 500 club this week – Richard Pitcairn-Knowles, a prime mover behind the Bushy Park Over-80’s rally every July and now in the VM90-94 age group completed his 500th parkrun, at Tonbridge.  He began his parkrun journey at Bromley in 2010 and has been to 67 different parkruns.

Most of the parkrun teams intending to have events on Christmas Day and/or New Years Day have now made their plans.  No decision yet probably means “NO!” All the runs in England and Wales will start at 9 a.m.  The days of 10:30 starts on 1st January are in the past!

Matters Arising - Bedfordshire parkruns

14 of us have run at least one Bedfordshire parkrun but no one in the club has done all seven. I've done six of them and have also run the missing one, Henlow Bridge Lakes, as a Freedom Run but not as an actual parkrun. Sarah Gordon has run four of them but nobody else more than two.

There have been 69 runs of Houghton Hall by seven of us, 61 of these were by Keith Johnson. Seven of us have also run Henlow Bridge Lakes, the one I've yet to run, and five of us have run Great Denham. In total we've only had 97 runs of Bedfordshire parkruns - 65 by Keith so 32 by the rest of us.

Joe's Black Park Pacer Squad

Joe has been organising his pacer squad at the first Saturday of the month at Black Park since 6th December 2014. In the photo are five of the original pacers of which at least three were pacing on Saturday - although each of them has slowed down.

  • Michael Hill - 23minute pacer in 2014, finished 29:27 on Saturday,
  • Toby Robinson - 25minute pacer in 2014, 29minute pacer on Saturday,
  • Steve Wells - 27minute then, now 30minutes,
  • Bob Stanbrook - 31 minute then, finished in 41:25 on Saturday,
  • Jackie Stallwood - 31minutes then, now 36minutes,
  • Also I note that Raymond John Hoyle was perhaps the 41minute pacer in 2014, and a parkwalker on Saturday (he is in the 80-84 age range).

In all 49 participants ran in both of these events and of those only four ran faster on Saturday than they did nine years ago. The other 45 had slower times...so perhaps pacing doesn't work? But they are all 9 years older - so considering age grade results...16 had better age grade results whereas 33 had worse - not so bad...and perhaps the jury needs to consider the conditions and other factors before forming a conclusion.

But well done Joe for organising this addition to the Black Park parkrun.

Retired Runners Lunch Confirmation & Details

This year's "retired runners lunch" will be at One-over-the-Ait, a Fullers pub by the Thames on the Middlesex bank right by Kew Bridge.  Kew Bridge has a rail station (Hounslow Loop) and is on various bus routes.  There is free street parking along Strand on the Green parking from 12 noon onwards.  Keep an eye out for signs warning of restrictions on through traffic as it is a "Low Traffic Neighbourhood".  W4 3PU for those needing a postcode to aim for. It is then possible to walk from Strand-on-the-Green to One-over-the-Ait through the Platinum Jubilee Arch under the Kew Bridge roadway (i.e. parallel to the river).

Active runners are welcome - the lunch is really for those who have retired from fulltime employment and missing out on corporate Christmas events.

Please let Steve Newell know if you are planning to attend.
