Barry Walters Running 10km Bracknell Thur 00:55:46 Ran over to almost the entrance to Ladyhill Park before retracing my steps back home. Speeded up over the second half which is always pleasing. Splits were 28:40 and 27:06.
Benita Scaife Running 4.2miles Virginia Water Fri am 00:45:02 We ran at Virginia Water Lake on Friday morning. The lakeside paths had in places only a thin strip that wasn’t inundated but we got round without wading. c. 4.2 miles 45:02.
John Scaife Running 4.2miles Virginia Water Fri am 00:45:02 As Benita
Chris Kelly Running 9Miles Dunsden Largest deer herd spotted this year - on a 9 mile run up Dunsden with Ben this morning - wild!
Fiona Bishop parkrun 5km Kirkdale (Melbourne, Victoria) Sat am 00:26:20 I did the Kirkdale parkrun straight after having covid for a week.  The parkrun is fairly flat with a hill 800m from the finish. I did 26:20 mins and got 76.96% and 33rd out of 121.
Harjit Jhooti parkrun 5km Richmond Park Sat am Did Richmond Parkrun and bumped into Jain Reid. We had a chat about marathon training as she is also doing London
Janet Smith parkrun 5km Ganger Farm Sat am Some more tourism for me, down on Ganger Farm before visiting friends in Southampton. Luckily, the one I had chosen still went ahead in these flooded times. It was soggy but not too bad ‍♀️
Julie Barclay Running 10km Tongham Tue 01:03:00 Road-running loop around Ash and Tongham.
Paul Watt Running 10km Tongham Tue 01:03:00 As Julie.
Melanie Miller  Race 10km Tadworth 10 Sun 01:23:37 A 1 or 2 loop route over the Epsom Downs depending on whether you did the 10k or 10m. Just shy of 10k I opted for that the single loop. Planning on walking it after nearly tripping on parkrun yesterday I opted to walk it and now wished I’d run it…the uphills are long n sweeping n gradual punctuated by short steep downhills, which I had to run…a very interesting course it has varied terrain too and wot a beautiful day 4 it….next year I shall have to run it…lol
Neil Frediani Running 12miles up 'north Sun 02:13:40 After 2 poor runs this week including parkrun yesterday I managed 12 miles at a decent 11min per mile pace today. That is 23miles for the week, not a bad start to the year.
Petra Otto Nordic Skiing 00:06:04 I improved on my Nordic Ski Erg PB - 6:04 mins. Down from 6:26 minutes.
Piers Keenleyside  Race Marathon Dubai Marathon 04:13:49 2nd in the MV65-69 age category. Started at 7am before sunrise and first 2 hours were OK but by the 2nd half things had warmed up too much for me! I bumped into Tim Bellars at the bag drop as he was also running the marathon today.
Tim Bellars  Race Marathon Dubai Marathon 04:23:19 Dubai Marathon 4.23.19. Great conditions for me but not quite back to full fitness.
Roderick Hoffman Running 10km Halls Gap, Victoria Thur 01:09:05 On a shared path…though it wasn't explained to me that I'd be sharing the path with Emus.
Stephen Taylor Running 13.1miles Richmond and back Sat 02:20:35 My week 1 marathon training long slow run was down to Richmond and back, avoiding the canal as it was definitely going to be too muddy.13.1 miles in 2:20:35.
Steve Hillier Cycling 35km Harrow & Brent Wed 02:36:00 With the winds staring to abate, I cycled east along the Grand Union Canal to Old Oak Common, lifting my bike over a few fallen trees.  My return was through the pot holed and flooded streets of Harlesden and Wembley, very slowly into the remaining breeze, but overtaking heavy traffic all the way.  Wembley Hill was higher than I remembered.

I'm out of the country this week therefore limited in the way I can include pictures. I'll leave you to work out which are deer and which are emus.

parkrun Review New Year’s Day Monday 1st January 2024

The days of the New Year doubles are (sadly  …!) now in the past but many members still enjoy a 9 a.m. 5km on whatever day of the week it is if it is 1st January.  Looking through the records of the likely suspects I found evidence that some of us have run 18 or even 19 times on New Year’s Day since that first New Year parkrun at Bushy in 2005 which was a Saturday anyway and only attracted 20 runners! Eight of those runners have gone on to join the 500 club in the meantime. Paul Sinton-Hewitt was particularly fond of a double and since they were stopped he has reduced his New Year’s Day runs - the last being on 1st January 2022.. If anyone has done 20 or more please let us know.

Vicky McFarlane, a new member who joined wef 0001, 1/1/24 celebrated joining our club with PB at Horsham parkrun.  Just a reminder that anyone joining us between now and the end of March will not have to pay another sub until 1 April 2025.

Our two “first-footers” and adding to the club’s different parkruns total were in Victoria Australia (GMT +11) at diametrically opposite fringes of Melbourne.  Fiona Bishop (27:52) at Altona Beach (slightly North and East) and Roderick Hoffman (32:07) at Mullum Mullum (South and West).
Most members stayed fairly close to home but Paul Watt (21:28) and Julie Barclay (23:32) went to Wickford Memorial, near Basildon,  in Essex which none of us have been to before.

Elise Lawrenson (27:25) completed her 250th run at Nonsuch.  Mike Dennison (20:45) ran at Richmond Park for the ninth time and his P-Index has moved up to 9 (nine different parkruns run at least nine times each).

parkrun Review Saturday 6th January 2024

Fiona Bishop (26:20) started our first Saturday of the year off in Melbourne with a visit to Kirkland Reserve at 8 a.m. (GMT +11.00). Roderick Hoffman (33::44) followed half an hour later in Adelaide with a visit to Belair National Park which only started in December but is already attracting large numbers each week, again with an 8 a.m. start.  (GMT +10:30).  Nobody was in Europe as far we know!

Alice Banks (28:52) might have been expected to run her 250th parkrun over her home course at Higginson, Marlow but with the Thames covering much of the course she chose to go to Black Park and the scene of her very first parkrun almost ten years ago.  Marlow was just one of scores of events called off this week because of the weather. Benita Scaife(34:19) sought out a dryish parkrun at Newbury for her 300th run on a second visit after eight years away.

Mike Dennison (19:55, 84.18%) had a good run at Heslington in York.  The “York” York parkrun was cancelled with the race course described as a lake.  Mike’s search for a “Y” has been extended for at least another week.

Chris Kelly (38:12), with his favourite courses at Reading and Dinton Pastures flooded, ran at University Parks (Oxford) where a thoughtfully designed dry route was used for the first time.

Meanwhile back at Bushy Park there were 1662 finishers which made it one of the ten busiest Bushy parkruns of all time.  The first and second Saturday runs in January have often been very busy.  No top thousand finish for Di Smith (48:15) this week. You needed to be under 30 minutes to get a three figure finishing place.  We didn’t have anyone running at Gunnersbury this Saturday but it is interesting to note that there was an attendance of 686 this week, that is the biggest since just before the pandemic when 700 people ran each week at the beginning of 2020.  Is something happening ?  There were almost 1300 runners at Clapham Common, close to an all-time record.

Large Finish

1662 at Bushy sounds a lot of finishers but it wasn't the highest last Saturday. 1792 finished at Voortrekker Monument parkrun in South Africa, on its second return after a closure gap, this time of 199 weeks. The Run Director reports "It was crazy. I was NOT expecting these numbers! I thought 800, maybe a thousand and then this happened. We actually delayed the start by 10 minutes as the queue to get in was over 1km long! I have to hand it to our over 50 volunteers. It was an extraordinary restart (and took me over 2 hours to edit excel files with the results) for an extraordinary parkrun venue!"

Special Achievements Numbers

25, 50, 100, 250, 500 are special achievement numbers and some consider the Fibonacci and Prime Number sequences also. But as an airline running club we have other numbers to celebrate. The last new aircraft I worked on for British Airways was the Boeing 787 (Dreamliner). I was delighted therefore to have run event number 787 for the BAAC. This is a list of such achievements - let me have any other number requests:
