Editorial - "Oppenheimer", "Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey", and from BAAC...

As Steve reports below it is our awards evening next week. "Oppenheimer" has won the Oscar for best film and "Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey" the Razzie for worst film.  So who in BAAC will win the Athlete of the Year and the Alamo Trophy for biggest misdeed at WARR? There is only one way to find out first...

BAAC Awards Evening – Wednesday 20th March

This event is our Oscars, Sports Personality of the Year and BAFTAS rolled into one.  Bedfont Sports Club will be rolling out the red carpet to greet trophy winners and adoring fans alike.  Please come and join us for a free banquet of takeaway pizza and curry (GF, Veg, Vegan catered for!)

The stars will be making their entrance for food at 1930, with trophy speeches and popping flash bulbs starting at 2000.
Have you won a trophy?  Come and find out.

If you’re a member or friend of the club, it would be crazy to miss this one, wouldn’t it?

New Membership Year

It is that time when we hope that you will be checking that your BAAC Standing Orders are ready to go on 1st April 2024 (not before!).

Our membership fee is still frozen at £9 - exceptional value for the year 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025.

Those who have previously Affiliated, to England Athletics, need to know that they have changed the Affiliation Fee again, this year, going up to £19. Thus with our Subs, at £9, this makes a new total of £28 this year. Please update your Scheduled Payment/Standing Order respectively, and we shall be able, through the magic of electrical banking, to see your efforts, and renew your Affiliation accordingly.

Regards,

Chris Kelly (Treasurer, BAAC)

PS. There is no change to the destination bank account - if you need a reminder of the account please email > Chris Kelly

Note that to join or renew membership of the British Airways Athletics Club you must agree to:

  • adhere to BAAC’s Inclusion Policy,
  • be respectful of all fellow runners, officials and spectators,
  • follow the letter and the spirit of fair play,
  • ensure that they do not bring the running club into disrespect.

Renewals will be accepted on the understanding that you accept the above.

Speedbird Ladies 5K – Race Director?

You will recall that we invited interest in this role in January…

This 5K event has proved to be one of our most enduring successes, with a good turnout of ladies ensuring a popular race.  It is also, traditionally, our best marshalled race, with plenty of willing volunteers turning out to make it happen.

This year, we hope to stage the event once more at Waterside, and we have some supporters ready to help.  There’s one role that we need to fill, that of Race Director.  This individual would organise the volunteers, and keep an overview of the plans for the race.

Could the Race Director be you?  If you would like to take on this interesting role, please make one of the committee aware of your interest.

If we can’t find a willing candidate to take on this role, I’m afraid that we will not be able to stage this event in 2024.

Thank you,

Steve Hillier

parkrun Review Saturday 9th March 2024

We have been going through a relatively quiet spell when it comes to visiting new parkruns for the club recently.  This week Benita and John Scaife visited Thomas Mills (High School) parkrun in Framlington, Suffolk which started pre-Covid and seems to be one of the events which cheerfully continues with fairly small attendances.  Thomas Mills was an eighteenth century philanthropist who founded a school which has evolved and survived over the years. Singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran is a recent former pupil.  The club total moves on to 803 different parkruns (worldwide).

The number of waterlogged UK parkrun courses has reduced since the start of the month but there were several cancellations again this week including Reading and Marlow which have each been able to host a parkrun only twice this year.

Our members continue to be tourists seeking out fresh experiences for themselves.  Paul Watt (20:35) and Julie Barclay (22:52) were at Cassiobury (Watford) for the first time and edged closer to completing the M25 ring. Their rival, Trish McCabe (28:20), went to Dartford Heath and that just leaves her with Roding Valley outstanding.

Piers Keenleyside (28:13) was at Clapham Common for the first time – the attendance this week was 869. Only Bushy Park (1441) and Southampton (1049) had bigger fields this week.

Harjit Jhooti (51:21) paid her first visit to the undulating parkrun course at Crystal Palace.  David Duggan (35:37) went to Horsham for the first time.  Elize Lawrenson (25:44) was attracted to Ifield Mill Pond.  Janet Smith (37:03) was at Leamington for the first time. Melanie Miller (40:35) chose Newbury for her groundbreaking run.

Several of our regular Bushy Park runners returned home and helped to swell the attendance up to the usual weekly level of 1400-1500.  Mike Dennison (19:59) was the last finisher over the line in under 20 minutes (in 79th place, M72).

Matters Arising - Ralph

Ralph joined me at Stockley Country parkrun for his first UK parkrun. He has now done 180 parkruns at 77 locations in 12 different countries including 54 of the 58 German parkruns. Others will know him as one of the photographers at WARR. And some of us know that, going further back, he was a serious Track & Field athlete. The photograph shows him clearing 1.9m at the ASCA Track & Field in Copenhagen in 1981.

Fiona Bishop at Zuiderpark parkrunFiona

Here is the photo taken at Zuiderpark parkrun on the 2nd March. I hope to do the double alphabet in the summer having pre-booked the different parkrun. I will let you know when..I am hoping to go to Ziegelwiese parkrun, Valentine parkrun, Quakers walk parkrun and Yarborough Leisure Centre parkrun...for the last few letters for the second set of alphabet...

It was very cold but a fast and flat course at Zuiderpark. No wonder I did the fastest time this year so far at parkrun !!

Bushy Pacers

My analysis of the latest Bushy result brings me to the conclusion that all of the pacers on the day were women. So much for equal opportunities at parkrun! [perhaps every other month is a men's pacer event].
