Northumberland
10k and Longford 5k, Wednesday 10th April, results #
The inaugural Northumberland 10km (and Longford 5km) was held at Bedfont
on the evening of Wednesday 10th April 2019. The sun was low in the
sky and there was a cool easterly breeze which meant that the aircraft were
taking off heading towards London.
We are grateful to Harry Wild for acting as starter and timekeeper.
The majority of runners enjoyed the new course although some had
self-inflicted navigation problems (not memorising the very simple
instructions issued beforehand) and those who had taken in the Norbiton
Street Orienteering event the previous evening found their hectic life
catching up with them.
Questions were raised about the accuracy of the course measurement and
also about the continuous availability of signals from the satellites
feeding the GPS devices. There will be another walk of the lap with a
surveyor’s wheel before the next time – and there will be a next time.
The runners enjoyed a BAAC sponsored meal of curry and pizza at the
Bedfont Club afterwards.

The club featured parkrun at Brooklands was well supported and children of
members joined in as well. Paul Knechtl (17:49) was the fastest by quite a
margin and set a new club record. 27 members have now run at Brooklands at
least once (it only started last November) but no-one has so far taken up even
semi-permanent residence. It is probably worth another visit over the
summer when the muddy path through the woods is less of an issue. [photo next
issue - if I remember]
Our global tourists were still on the go and our total is now up to 491.
Lesley Chamberlin (30:41) was at Hazyview close to the Kruger National Park in
South Africa, Maria Jovani (21:18) was at Caffarella in Rome and set an age
category record while, later, Roderick Hoffman (27:10) was at Beach Strip by
Lake Ontario prior to a visit to Niagara Falls. Petra Otto (36:10) also
set an age category record at Westpark in Munich over the weekend.
Alice Banks (25:53), just a week after her appearance at the inaugural in
Japan, was back at Abingdon in Oxfordshire and set a female club record there.
Adrian Haines (19:53) emerged from a winter zooming round indoor tracks to
run his 50th parkrun and lower the club record at Forest of Dean. Jain
Reid (28:13), one of our London marathon entrants, achieved a pb at Richmond
Park on her 45th run there.

Updated parkrun Stats -
club parkrun stats
When in Rome
Last Saturday I took part on my 2nd international parkrun. I did my
bit of parkrun tourism in Caffarella park in Rome. The park has a very
easy access from the city centre. Colli Albani is the nearest
underground station only a few minutes walk to the park. I used the
train to reach the park stopping at Roma Tuscolana train station which
is only 1 mile away from the park that I used as a warm up.
I arrived at the park 8.15 allowing myself few minutes to spare I
case I couldn’t find the start of the run but soon I spotted few parkrun
t-shirts and the parkrun flag (sigh of relief knowing I was in the right
place).
It is a fast and flat course consisting in two anti-clockwise laps
with the 2nd lap being slightly longer than the 1st lap. The course
itself was very well signed posted with a couple of marshals in the key
points.
The 1st timers briefing was translated in English to the non-Italian
speakers and we also had a short introduction about the park by the very
enthusiastic RD.
I was very lucky that one the volunteers had to tick few miles after
parkrun so I tagged along. He knew the park like the back of his hand
and showed me many historical monuments. I would highly recommend to
stay in the park after the run, do a little research and try to visit
few.

Norbiton Street-O Results
Last Tuesday was the penultimate event in this season's South London Street-O
event and the venue for Norbiton. BA had three runners with Simon Turton
having a particularly good run finishing in 15th place on the night (of 86
competitors) and with 690 points collected. Roderick Hoffman had a much
better run than last time out and scored 518 points (after deductions for 3:04
time penalties) and Christine Munden finished with 210 points. Also of
interest former member Bill Byrne (running with Claire) ran their first Street-O
event and finished with a creditable 490 points.
In the overall standings Simon, Christine and myself all managed to score
more points than one of our previous events hence improved our overall scores.
However other people improved their scores by more so Simon has slipped to 11th
place, I'm down to 34th (but one of only three people to have run all eight
events so far this year) and Christine has managed to retain 10th place amongst
the ladies.
The next and last event in this year's series will be in Wandsworth on
Tuesday 14th of May.
Roderick Hoffman
PS Simon thinks that it is unfair for everyone else in the club to be
deprived of the opportunity to run in a Street-O event over the summer and so he
is planning an event around the Bedfont Club area on 21st August - our Club
Inhouse Event for August.
