Results for Next Week

Please help me by sending in your results, for instance by filling in the tables below and forwarding to News@barunner.org.uk. Some events will have "Prompts" set up in Facebook. These allow the posting of a single image and some text and make it easy to flip through everyone's entries.

Monthly Mile - please submit your April Mile performance for publication in the first May digest (6th May):

Run one mile and send me your time or add the details to the prompt in Facebook. The mile can be somebody else's formal event or even one mile within a longer run. I'll then produce a fancy graph showing your time this month compared to those of other people and previous runs over the last year:

Mile Participant Location Date How Measured Duration/Time Comment: e.g. event

Your Athletic Achievement of the Week (or use the prompt in the BAAC Facebook group):

Participant Event Distance Location Day/Start Time or Duration Details or comment, and other achievements
e.g. Running

There is little to read this week because nothing has been submitted.  Events this week and next weekend may generate some quickly written reports. I can always hope.

Colleague Activity Distance Course When Duration Comments
Andy Rayner Various Various Fri Cycle Ockwells plus part estate in 15m 22s (windy) / Sat Cycle Cox Green plus Ockwells in 19m 23s / Sun Cycle Ockwells plus part estate in 11m 52s (perfect conditions).
Barry Walters Running 4km Algarve, Portugal Sun am 00:25:00 Managed an easy 25min. early morning run along the beach near where I was staying. Conditions were ideal and the sun was just coming up and tide just starting to recede. Best run of my short trip.
Benita Scaife parkrun 5km Aylesbury Sat am Now that we are Berksdone and Oxdone we are creeping towards Bucksdone - Aylesbury is our 6th of 11 in that county. Their first parkrun for 3 weeks following flooding of the regular and back-up courses…
John Scaife parkrun 5km Aylesbury Sat am ...This week the B course was useable. Good path all the way and only a couple of slippery bits where the water hadn’t fully receded. Benita was given 10 seconds faster than me even though we finished together.
Chris Kelly  Race Marathon Manchester Marathon Sun am 04:18:59 Manchester Marathon for me, son Ben, his friends Tom and Robbie, my school friends Dan and Joe, and cousins Jackie and Billy. My knee held out to finish in 4:19, crucially qualifying for Comrades in June.
Ben Kelly  Race Marathon Manchester Marathon Sun am 04:18:59 [recorded as one place behind Chris]
Eddie Giles Various Gym Thur Started with all body stretches and arm weights, then 10 mins cycling, 10 mins rowing, a gentle 10-minute mile then upped the pace to 7.35 for 2nd mile [for the club April mile].
Jasvir Singh Modaher  Race Marathon Manchester Marathon Sun am 05:53:55
Petra Otto parkrun 5km March Sat am 00:54:34 Nordic walking with a 10-minute faster time than last week without trying. + Nordic skier, cross trainer, rower and weights at the gym. Hamstring held out, but osteoarthritis in my groin made walking quite painful after 2.5km.
Piers Keenleyside  Race Half-M Reading Half Sun am 01:55:35 Had planned on a very slow pace so as not to aggravate my glute injury. However, I found myself doing 8:45 m/m pace rather than 10:30 and it fell quite easy and not too painful so maintained that to the end.
Roderick Hoffman Orienteering 9.27km Wandsworth Street-O Tue pm 01:00:01 Very pleased to have covered 0.5km more distance in the hour than in Street-Os for years. The 1s time penalty was only because I had to queue up to finish!
Sarah Gordon Walking 50miles Great Glen Week Week Walked most of the way though did use the boat (pictured) for the interesting bits through the locks.
Stephen Taylor Running 10miles Grand Union Canal 01:44:01 My late entry is a longish run along the canal. 10 miles, 1:44:01… passing the duck looking after it's ducking.
Tim Bellars  Race 56km Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (Cape Town) Sun 06:25:41 4th marathon in 4 months for my MNDA challenge. 7 marathons in 7 months in 7 countries. Tough but everything holding up well!!! Fantastic scenery. Very happy with time, comfortably inside the 7hr cutoff.

Week Achievement photos

My photograph isn't from the Orienteering - it was my Sunday run which like Stephen's was on the Grand Union Canal...but this bit was its far end, 137 miles from Brentford, at Digbeth Junction in Birmingham.

parkrun Review Saturday 13th April 2024

The London area enjoyed a pleasant sunny Spring morning, warm even, but Reading parkrun was predictably cancelled yet again.  Maybe, next week!  Chris Kelly (24:23) fled north and made one of his occasional visits to South Manchester (8 times now, all in different years, this year for the weekend of the Manchester Marathon).  The parkrun at Marlow went ahead for only the fourth time since Christmas Day - Alice and John Banks volunteered to help.

We had 37 parkrunners this week and that doesn’t include al least three non-running volunteers.  The treasurer thanks everyone who has renewed their membership over the last two weeks (just about everyone).

Osterley parkrun was once again the favourite this week with seven members attending – Scott Davidson (24:51) was our quickest there this week, our newest “500 man” Bob Bannister (50:01) enjoyed a relaxing stroll round the course which everyone is entitled to do.  The next most popular turned out to be Southall parkrun, less than two miles away.  Maria Jovani (20:49) chopped over a minute from her previous pb there.  Emma Moreton (22:51) was running there for the first time, taking her to 24 different parkruns.

Ian Cunningham (26: 45) lowered the club course record at Jamaica Pond in Boston – host city of a “major” marathon on Monday (Patriots Day).  There was a record attendance of 458 against a typical Saturday turnout of 100 -150.  Don’t look for a record turnout at Victoria Dock parkrun next Saturday right next to London Marathon registration – it has been cancelled! (the parkrun, that is).  Becton is only one further stop along the DLR (and attracted twice its usual crowd on the corresponding weekend last year – but still not that busy).

Where are they now?

Former member Caroline Yarnell (24:21) ran her first parkrun of the year at Kawana Surf Club on the Sunshine Coast, North of Brisbane.  The course includes a stretch along the beach but only in December and January.  Tony Wong (27:32) was also “in the field”.

From Eddie Giles

I exchanged emails with Eddie who reported that following his recent successful hospital procedure he is enjoying running again, he is hoping to get back to the level of fitness he was at before, and he asked me to pass on his regards to all that know him.
