Editorial - Please join us on Wednesday at the Bedfont Club for our annual quiz, details from Steve follows below.

The Quiz will be from 8pm and the club is providing food for all. The food at this and other club evenings is funded from donations given to the club from the London Marathon group as thanks for our marshalling efforts. So if you've helped as a marshal OR if you've paid to enter the London Marathon or have any other involvement with the club - then please enjoy the food provided! NB: the club doesn't fund drinks - but the Bedfont Club bar will be open throughout.

Before the quiz Simon Turton will be on hand from about 18:30 to answer any queries about the marshalling of this year's London Marathon on Sunday. Note that there is no formal briefing and there is nothing to collect on the night so Simon won't be troubled if we all go for a run instead. The changing rooms will be open from about 17:45 and we can go for an informal run, jog or walk from 18:00, together or independently.

BAAC Quiz:  Wednesday 19th April 2023, Bedfont

It’s time for our quiz, to be held at the Bedfont & Feltham Football & Social Club, close to Hatton Cross.   Everyone is welcome!

The team size will be between four and six – come as a team, or join up with some others on the night.  No-one will be left out.  You will be tackling General Knowledge and specialist questions, as well as some brain teasers!  We will be raising funds for our White Lodge charity [Ed: I think we normally ask for a £1 donation per participant].

The quiz will start at 8pm, following our London Marathon Social.  Food will be provided.  Please contact Steve beforehand if you have specific dietary requirements.

Any indication of how many might attend, would be much appreciated!

Northumberland 10km - Wednesday 12th April 2022 # Results

It was a dull and damp evening with a chilling breeze that greeted the runners for the first Northumberland 10km at Bedfont since the Covid19 interruption.

We welcomed David Cowell (42:41) to his first Bedfont event.  His sub-20 minute parkruns had warned us of his capabilities and he bettered the previous course record (44:34) set by Chris Kelly in 2019.

Start times were based on runners' estimates, all aiming to finish at around 7.15 p.m. (provided they had reached the start line in time!)

Two timekeepers and three runners ventured across Hatton Road to the Duke Of Wellington and enjoyed the Indian and more local menu after the run.

April Mile Results

April mile results graph

Four runners this month, including David Cowell with his first submission. Great consistency from Stephen, just one second slower than his time on the previous two runs. Now if he can just do 26 of those on Sunday...it'd be a 3:33 marathon time!

World Airline Road Race Reminder

The World Airline Road Race is the airline industry's top annual running event. Held over a four-day period but focused on race day which features a 10k road race and a 5k road race. The races are taken very seriously at the front...and for age categories throughout...but less seriously by some of us towards the back, especially in the 5k which for many will be their second "race" of the day.

This year's event will be the 40th and is being held in Calgary, Canada with race day Sunday September 24th. For more details and for a link to enter the event see 40th World Airline Road Race. Runners representing 19 airlines have already registered including four from BA.

Eligibility for the main prizes are for those either working for the airline or retired from the airline - with some leniency when it comes to contractors and in some other cases. There are also non-airline entrants including friends and family members. Let me know if you may be interested, either by emailing me below or by entering the event and ticking the "British Airways +" team box. Although BA doesn't currently fly from Heathrow to Calgary, Canadian airlines do or we can connect from any of the various US and Canadian hubs that BA does fly to.

parkrun Review 15th April 2023

After another week of April showers a few parkruns were called because of waterlogged courses and elsewhere poorly drained carparks featured huge puddles.  Looking ahead to next month it looks like most parkruns will go ahead on Coronation Day (6th May) although some parks are being taken over for special Coronation Events.   Older readers will recall the last coronation when it rained, a lot.

The Stockley Country parkrun continues to attract “Londone” chasing parkrunners but numbers are generally down to a manageable size with fewer than 100 runners on four of the most recent five Saturdays.

Fiona Bishop (26:48) went to the inaugural that wasn’t a run #1 at Milton Country Park in Cambridge.  The Cambridge parkrun (in Milton Country Park) never returned after the Covid interruption but has been reborn with a new name with run #517, and inherited all the old data.  Roderick Hoffman (24:56) was our only runner there (almost ten years ago) in its previous existence.

Our latest “500” parkrunner Ian Cunningham returned to action after resting for a week with a trip to The Netherlands at Zuiderpark (translates into “South Park” in The Hague) to notch up a rare “Z” for the alphabet challenge.  He has a bit of work to do now, starting with finding an “A”!  Our next “500” parkrunner (on 499) is confidently predicted to be Mike Dennison who was volunteering this week,  timekeeping at Hanworth.  He plans to be at Broadwater parkrun (Godalming) on Saturday.  Our oldest “500” runner, Alan Anderson (47:02) achieved a rare “pb” this week on his third run at Rickmansworth where he seems to be improving every time.  His score is now up to 653 (and he was volunteering at Osterley Junior parkrun on Sunday too!).

Steve Newell

new and reborn UK parkruns

There were three new or reborn UK parkruns last Saturday. When we had a participation of 417 at the inaugural Stockley Country, including a virtual coachload from Guildford, I fed back to parkrun HQ that they had to stop listing new events until the day of their inaugural. Last week Wynyard Woodland (north of Stockton-on-Tees) was listed from Tuesday and had 414 at its inaugural, the reborn Milton Country wasn't listed until the Saturday and attracted 296 (about the same number that "Cambridge" used to attract) and Abbey Park (Leicester) wasn't listed until Sunday and attracted just 123. I rest my case.
