Editorial - Activity Achievements
I started listing colleagues' activity achievements at the end of
March 2020 when the Coronavirus restrictions meant that we were
temporarily unable to meet to run together. It enabled each of us to
share what we had achieved, even though we were physically isolated. The
restrictions were removed, but it was obvious that you wanted the
feature to continue, and so it has done, and so it will. Each week I
publish what you have supplied or publicised as your best achievement.
It isn't my job to value or judge achievements, so I'm happy to apply exactly the
same weight whether your best achievement is a brisk walk or a climb of
Everest. I usually present the achievements alphabetically by first name. This
week is no exception, alphabetically by name...

Weather was mild and stayed dry. The key with night orienteering is
to take it steady and concentrate on identifying good attack points into
controls, with ideally line feature running between controls as errors
can cost valuable time and it can be hard to relocate. Pleased with my
course, placing 17th of 45. Only downside was I tripped and broke my
brand new Silva thumb ☹️. |

New World Record
Yes, with three British Masters Team colleagues Adrian set a new World Record
last week for the M55 4 x 800m relay. Adrian ran his leg in 2:16 and the
team finished in 8:57.37 beating the previous record of 9:00.85 set by a Spanish
team in March 2022. The other runners were David Cowlishaw,
Steve Atkinson and Rob McHarg (Datchet Dashers). For a fuller story, including
pictures of Adrian, see:
Three relay
records fall at Lee Valley - Masters Athletics UK or watch the race on
YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WvqauNBjYU
(Adrian is the first leg runner).
Adrian had a good week last week - after the world record performance he travelled to the BMAF British Indoor
Championships in Sheffield where on Saturday he won the M55 800m by a short nose in 2:12.20. There were only 6 hundreds of a second
between Adrian and two of his relay colleagues in second and third place so it
was quite a race! See:
LIVE
ATHLETICS | British Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships - Day 1 - YouTube
and scroll to 5:15 for the start of the 800m. He repeated the
victory the next day in the 1500m (4:37.86) although this time with a
comfortable win by 0.38 of a second - and his gold medal was presented by his
daughter Gemma. Adrian also got a bronze in the 400m with
59.4. And now "Rest, recovery. Don’t get ill and back to training for Worlds in
Poland at the end of March."
Club Featured parkrun - Stockley Country 18th Feb 2023

A great turnout on Saturday at Stockley Country parkrun - the fifteen pictured
plus Bob and Anne Bannister. David Cowan had also been due to join us until BA
made a late change to his schedule. A full report of the event can be found at
news | Stockley
Country parkrun including my appeal to VAR at Stockley Park due to Graham's
achievement being enabled by the moving of the goalposts.
Roderick Hoffman
Everyone is also welcome this Saturday at Stockley Country parkrun, as
participants or volunteers, as the Mayor of Hillingdon will be there to
officially open the event, though we haven't been told whether she is bringing
her running shoes.
I've asked Keith Johnson to propose future Club Featured parkruns for April and May.
Winter Five Mile Handicap - This Wednesday 22nd February
The fifth leg (of 6) of the winter 5 mile handicap series will be run from
the Bedfont Club
this Wednesday (22nd Feb). Runners start from 6 p.m. aiming to finish at 7 p.m..
A look at the points table shows that Stephen Taylor and Paul Watt are
handily placed at this stage but good runs from Maarten Stenham, Amanda Coombs
or even Roderick Hoffman could see them on the podium after the finale run which
will be on the last Wednesday in March, by which time we will be back onto
British Summer Time.
Those wanting to walk a single 2.5 mile lap of the course are welcome to join
in and should be ready to start not later than 6.20 p.m.
Tell Steve to expect you, or just turn up with sufficient time to fit your
five mile run in and finish by 7 p.m..
> Steve
Newell
After the Handicap Run we will be holding a club committee meeting in a
corner of the function room. All are welcome, as usual.
World Airline Road Race 2023 Calgary update - Host Hotel and Schedule
The event is not yet open for registrations, but an update has been issued
relating to the host hotel and a schedule for the WARR events. Note that anyone
is allowed to enter the event although only current and former airline staff
will qualify for the major race classifications.
Hotel Update:
The Sheraton Suites Calgary Eau Claire will be the Host Hotel for WARR 2023
from September 22-25th. It is in the heart of downtown Calgary
(YYC) and an 8-minute walk to the race start at Sien Lok Park. The discounted
room-only rate for the hotel will be $219 CDN, per night (approx.: £135), plus
about $30 CDN in taxes. Details of how to book the rooms at that rate will be
announced in ten days' time but now the WARR hosts would like anyone who is
likely to want to book a room in March to email them by the end of Tuesday
21st February so that they can judge how many rooms to ask for. Please mail them
at
> World Airline Road Race
and indicate whether you'd want 1 King Bed or 2 Queen Beds and the
potential duration of your stay.
They also advise that because of other events happening in Calgary it will prove very difficult to
get rooms for dates prior to 22nd September, but after the 24th there should be
no problem.
Draft Event Schedule:
- September 22 5:00 p.m. - Meet & Greet
- September 23 9:00 a.m. - Team Captain's Meeting
- September 23 5:00 p.m. - T-Shirt Party & Dinner
- September 24 7:30 a.m. - 10K at Sien Lok Park
- September 24 9:00 a.m. - 5K at Sien Lok Park
- September 24 10:30 a.m. - Team Photos
- September 24 10:45 a.m. - Awards Presentation at Race Venue
- September 24 6:00 p.m. - Wind-up Dinner Party
I have already notified the WARR Hosts that whilst I will be attending the races, I will not be attending the Team Captain's
meeting, unless they change either the time, or change the location and style of
meeting to Nose Hill
parkrun in Calgary which has a 9am start time.

parkrun review Saturday 18h February 2023
The designated club featured parkrun at Stockley Country Park (West Drayton)
attracted a splendid attendance of well over a dozen members, plus some family
(without dogs!) led home by John Taylor (21:41) marking his 50th parkrun with a
fifth place finish. The time puts him 6th out of 85 in his VM55 age group
at Stockley. Not far behind, 11th place overall, came Mark Taylor (22:09)
who is in the next more senior age group and in second place there. This
was the sixth running of London’s newest parkrun and the conditions round the
course variation chosen this week were excellent. The majority of the
runners were first timers (at Stockley) but notably the majority of returnees
achieved PBs. Courses have varied over the first six weeks but I believe this
week’s was an accurate 5km. Does anyone disagree? Joan Foxley (39:41) had
been present at the inaugural but returned to leap to the top of her age
category. Roderick Hoffman was Run Director and Report Writer this week so
head over to the Stockley Country parkrun website for the comprehensive
illustrated report.
The highlights for those not at Stockley Country included David Duggan
(38:55) at Hout Bay (Cape Town); Paul Watt (19:58) and Julie Barclay (22:47)
breaking club records at Lordship Recreation in North London.
We now have two runners on the home straight heading towards the “500”.
Ian Cunningham (with or without a dog) is on 495 with Mike Dennison not far
behind on 492. So far (worldwide) 429 people have reached 500 parkruns with a
handful graduating most weeks. Alan Anderson jogs serenely on with 645 while
former member David Tyas is further ahead on 674. Just 10 runners have
reached the 700 mark and nine of them were still at it this week! Let’s
call it habit forming rather than addictive! A healthy lifestyle.
