Results for Next Week

Please help me by sending in your results, for instance by filling in the tables below and forwarding to News@barunner.org.uk. Some events will have "Prompts" set up in Facebook. These allow the posting of a single image and some text and make it easy to flip through everyone's entries.

Monthly Mile (please submit your August Mile performance by the end of the month):

Run one mile and send me your time or add the details to the prompt in Facebook. The mile can be somebody else's formal event or even one mile within a longer run. I'll then produce a fancy graph showing your time this month compared to those of other people and previous runs over the last year: [no need to submit if your best mile is one of the Arethusa miles, I'll check the tables].

NOW - tomorrow, Tuesday 22nd August at Boston Manor - reminder

Meet around 12:00 in front of children's playground adjacent to the car park. The car park is left off from Boston Manor Road (heading north), just after the GSK building north of the A4 (and under the M4 flyover). Post code TW8 9JX. Charges are 50p for an hour, £1 for 2 hours or £2 for 3 hours.

The running route is about 5km and will incorporate the park and nearby Grand Union Canal; we will run as a group. There is also the option of walking and Piers will provide some written instructions for the suggested route.

Listen carefully at the start since there is a choice of cafes and we'll decide which one to use on the day. The new cafe at the Manor House has a nice paved patio area, but the prices seem a bit steep. The Potting Shed Cafe next to the playground/car park seems better value although the menu does not stretch to a 'Full English' which is on offer at the Manor House Cafe.

Let Roderick know to expect you, or sign-up via the calendar. We will look out for those we know are coming.

Equinox 5km and social evening, Wednesday 6th September

Just two weeks to go now so please let Steve Newell know if you:

  • i) plan to run (or walk) the Equinox 5km in Bedfont Lakes Country Park,
  • ii) just come and help,
  • iii) just come and watch,
  • iv) come along to Bedfont Football club in Hatton Road afterwards and would like a free sandwich or two but have special dietary requirements that we should know about.

At the event runners will start in small groups, all aiming to finish at 7 p.m. We will be using the Bedfont Road car park which can also reached by H26 bus from both Feltham and Hatton Cross stations. See below for ULEZ information.

Ultra Low Emission Zone information

The objective of the ULEZ expansion is to improve air quality within London. Therefore, as outdoor runners, we should see the principle of it positively, albeit there being implementation issues. The ULEZ zone expansion occurs on Tuesday 29th August. Therefore there is no change for this week's NOW event and this weekend's parkruns.

From Tuesday 29th August anyone driving to most events occurring in Greater London in a non-compliant vehicle will have to pay the ULEZ charge for that day. Many, probably most, vehicles are compliant but please check rather than make an assumption. The ULEZ area is roughly the same as the Greater London boundary but there are some exceptions which allow small incursions within Greater London. One such exception is Clockhouse Lane, to the west of Bedfont Lakes. Although within Greater London this road is not within the ULEZ. It is ambiguous as to whether the Bedfont Lakes Clockhouse Lane carpark is within or outside the ULEZ but in the absence of signage or cameras it should be safe to park in without paying the ULEZ charge. This is the far side of the park from where we are meeting on 3rd September. The Bedfont Road carpark and the Bedfont Clubhouse are definitely within the ULEZ zone.

For those driving to parkruns the simple guide is that all Greater London parkruns [green on the map] are within the ULEZ zone, and all those outside Greater London are outside it [see map below, the blue boundary being the ULEZ]. But if you cut a corner across London then obviously you would be travelling within the charge zone. Bedfont Lakes is mentioned above. Bushy Park and perhaps Riddlesdown can be accessed on foot having parked with care outside the zone. Nonsuch is outside the zone but you may need to take care not to stray into the zone as you arrive or leave.

parkrun Review 19th August 2023

Ben Chaytow (22:37) grabbed the limelight this week with his 4th place overall at Brynaman parkrun on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in rural south Wales where none of us have visited before.  The club total moves on to 752.
Guided by time rather than position, Mike Dennison (20:37 at Guildford), Ian Haylock (20:34 at Bushy), Frankie Hogge (20:42 at Southwark), John Taylor (20:45 at Rickmansworth, Paul Watt (21:32 at the aptly named Hilly Fields in south London and Mark Taylor (21:54 at Evesham) caught the eye.

Nobody was overseas but we spread ourselves out of 26 different 5k UK parkruns.

 10 Best Placed Ladies

The data extract that we use from the parkrun reports doesn't include the field "Gender Position". For the ladies the following table shows the best overall finish position (so 2nd overall in the case of Maria) and from a different source I've included the number of different parkruns at which each runner has been first lady (albeit not necessarily when they were a BAAC member, and only counting one such occurrence at each parkrun - Emma for instance has been first lady at Bedfont Lakes five times in her most recent eleven runs and 11 times in total).

Also ran...

Finally, for those who don't feature in any of the above lists, have commiserations for Diane Smith. Since rejoining the club in May 2022, she has run 24 parkruns, all at Bushy. In those she is yet to finish within the top 1,000 places. Her highest place being 1,002nd. It IS the taking part that counts! [prior to rejoining she had had a 948th place finish]

STOP PRESS - Osterley parkrun has its 10th birthday on Saturday.

Troubled times for the sport of Triathlon

Ironman Canada, a popular event with club members in the 1990’s, was due to take place this coming weekend in British Columbia.
A swim in Lake Okanagan, a hilly bike ride towards the US border and a marathon run in and around the town of Penticton will have been the target of many athletes for many months.

With the forest fires threatening the popular holiday destination of Kelowna further up the lake it came as no surprise to hear that the event has been cancelled.

Meanwhile, in Paris, Olympic test events featuring a swim in the River Seine have been affected by concerns over water quality (E. coli levels).  British triathlete Alex Yee who already has a gold medal from the mixed team relay event from Tokyo won the men’s individual event on Friday with a very strong run and commented on the current in the river and hoped he wouldn’t fall ill.  The Paralympic test event on Saturday and the team event on Sunday were restricted to bike and run only.  A long distance swimming test event in The Seine planned for two weeks ago was cancelled.  Sewage overflows following heavy rain are blamed.

But it gets worse: On Sunday two swimmers in a half distance Ironman event in Ireland died.  The sea looked very rough after storm Betty had battered the area in the previous 24 hours.
