Results for Next Week

Please help me by sending in your results, for instance by filling in the tables below and forwarding to News@barunner.org.uk. Some events will have "Prompts" set up in Facebook. These allow the posting of a single image and some text and make it easy to flip through everyone's entries.

Monthly Mile - please submit your February Mile performance for publication in the first March digest (4th March):

Run one mile and send me your time or add the details to the prompt in Facebook. The mile can be somebody else's formal event or even one mile within a longer run. I'll then produce a fancy graph showing your time this month compared to those of other people and previous runs over the last year:

Mile Participant Location Date How Measured Duration/Time Comment: e.g. event

Your Athletic Achievement of the Week (or use the prompt in the BAAC Facebook group):

Club Featured parkrun - Saturday 2nd March at Osterley

A reminder of the BAAC / Harry Wild Cross Country Sunday 3rd March 2024, Cranford Park, 1030

This race takes place next weekend!  Thank you to everyone who has already committed to run or help.  We could still do with a few more marshals please, and further runners are always welcome.  The earlier you can let me know, the easier I will rest!  Thanks.

The race will celebrate Harry's life, and his contributions to BAAC and Hillingdon AC.  We will be joined by Harry's family, who will be starting the race and cheering on the runners.

The course will be flat and probably muddy, approximately 3 miles for women and 4.5 miles for men.

Parking is limited in Cranford Park.  Alternative parking is available in Roseville Road, Hayes, just five minutes walk from the start via a subway under the M4.

parkrun Review Saturday 24th February 2024

Another wet week across the country left many parkrun courses saturated or flooded and scores of events were cancelled.  Not for the first time recently, Chris Kelly (32:22) was unable to run his home course at Reading and this week made his first visit ever to Guildford where he encountered Alastair Heslop volunteering as funnel manager.  That takes Chris’s total to 599 parkruns at 85 different venues.

The club parkrun at Osterley this coming week (2nd March) will be to celebrate Alan Anderson reaching 700 runs last Saturday.  He is in a very select group of about 30 parkrunners round the world to reach that landmark.  Also, Steve Newell who has far too many run/triathlon related T-shirts already will be aiming to win the right to buy a blue parkrun 500 one!  Bob Bannister is on 498 runs and plans to run his 500th at Bedfont Lakes before Easter – watch this space for further details.

The trailed event at Stockley Country Park started in bright sunshine by the Worshipful Mayor of Hillingdon in a splendid red gown and “gold” chain of office went ahead with “good to soft” going.  More than half of the 125 finishers were running the course for the first time – twenty one were doing a parkrun for the very first time. {Ed: And there were also six participants who hadn't run a parkrun for over twelve months}.

Another parkrun was added to the club list this week.  Weighing in at #802 we have Bramshall Road (Uttoxeter).  David Cowell (19:09) was first across the line and that makes it nine different parkruns where he has achieved that distinction.  Getting some fresh air on a Saturday morning is good; trying and succeeding in reaching the person with the stopwatch on the finish line before anyone else is also allowed, everyone is welcome.  As long as club affiliations continue to be published in the parkrun results I’ll hope to continue reporting our parkrun involvement.

Matters Arising - Stockley Country parkrun

As Run Director on Saturday I was appreciative of Joan, Denis and Steve answering my call for help. On the day we had plenty of volunteers but that was only because a couple of the regulars who had expected to be away found that they were, after all, available. The 125 finishers isn't a large number compared to many parkruns but it is our largest number since last June. The occasion was the "graduation run" for a Couch to 5k programme run by Hayes and Harlington Road Runners.  Once the run was underway I did talk to the Mayor and his escorts from the council. They are supportive of parkrun but, obviously, parkruns are set up by groups of keen locals, not by councils. But the Council would like to see a Junior parkrun in Lake Farm, to the east of Stockley Park. The large former Southall Gasworks site (in Ealing) is being developed and Hillingdon Council would like there to be a new footbridge across the canal linking the new residential area to Minet Country Park. That might make that park much more accessible to a large number of people.

We mentioned last week that Phil Sesemann, Mark Taylor's daughter's cousin, achieved the Olympic qualifying time of 2hr 8mins 4 secs. Graham Taylor notes that Phil’s time has put him 3rd on the UK all time Men’s marathon times list.
