Track & Field 2023 – the final sprintThe 2023 season has ended for BAAC. Nine weeks and six matches after our opening throws and sprints at Battersea, the curtain came down at the pretty St Mary’s track in Twickenham. The venue is a university, and we were competing against students as well as athletes of our own age. Mike continued his excellent summer of sprints, once again tackling both 100m and 200m. His son, Kenny, had a blistering run in the non-scoring 100m, just failing to take first place in a tight finish. Steve closed his throwing season by hefting the full weight hammer and full-sized discus, then we enjoyed watching an impressive 4 x 200m relay zipping past on the track. Club July Mile ResultsDavid was fastest this month and Alan Friar gets the "taking part" prize. Both of these performances were at the pre-AGM mile at Feltham track at the beginning of the month. Bob, Ian and Mike ran various times at the Arethusa Mile, as did I once. I say that they ran various times but Bob didn't show much variation with 7:09, 7:08, 7:07 and a best of 7:06. Ian and Mike tend to be very close - but I've noticed a trend that if they are very close at the same event then Ian will finish one second ahead of Mike.
The Arethusa Mile continues every Wednesday in Bushy Park for anyone who wants to run a mile on a quiet road circuit against others. It is unlikely to be as wet as it was last Wednesday [picture - results announcements]. The best club miles for August will be published in the 4th September digest. Big Half 3rd SeptemberThank you for your responses to the requests for volunteers. I'm pleased to say that we now have a full squad for the day, all others can save their volunteering energies for future events. parkrun Review 29th July 2023Osterley Park attracted the biggest group of our members this week (6) who were led home by Mike Dennison (21:01, 79:78%) and Maria Jovani (21:50). The attendance was up on the recent average because nearby Gunnersbury had been invaded by some caravans on Friday afternoon and the park authorities there withdrew permission for parkrun to take place. There is a possibility that Gunnersbury parkrun will be suspended this coming week as well – keep an eye on the parkrun UK cancellations website listing. parkruns often have to make way for concerts, flower shows, triathlons, etc. at this time of year. Alan Anderson (44:41) maintained his recent improvement and is now down to within a minute of his best time at Osterley in his current age group.(85-89). Obviously you can only claim a parkrun course pb by returning to a park and running faster than previously. Bob Bannister (26:27) did just that at Stockley Country. Others prefer to wander the land (or even the world) seeking out new experiences, visiting a particular parkrun, run once and never returning. Roderick Hoffman (31:45) took his total up to 357 different parkruns at Market Bosworth and over 300 of those have never seen him again!* This week’s first timers (maybe only timers!) included Fiona Bishop (24:42, 82.05%) at Cassiobury and Julie Barclay (23:52, 80.17%) at Littlehampton. Julie has only revisited 12 of the 154 different parkruns she has visited. Frankie Hogge (21:44) was first lady home at Shipley Country and is 2nd out of 263 in her age group there. Sarah Gordon (40:28) went where none of us had been before and tried Sewerby parkrun on the coast near Bridlington which has been going since the Autumn of 2011. There are still some little gems to be discovered. The club total moves up to 749. Who will get the 750th? Probably next Saturday. Steve Newell Matters Arising* My reason for being at Market Bosworth was partly to celebrate a Hoffman Club member achieving her "Bailey" - 100 different parkruns in her first 100 parkruns. It is true that whilst on track Hoffman Club members never get parkrun PBs or PWs! Restricted Access parkrunsThere is now a parkrun operating in Belgium! SHAPE parkrun, near Mons. But before you all invest in Eurostar tickets I need to warn you that it is a restricted access parkrun operated under the UK flag at a military base. There are a growing list of such parkruns - the first was on the Falklands (at Mount Pleasant, the one at Cape Pembroke Lighthouse is open to the public, in case you are passing through), then there are now two on Cyprus (Akrotiri and ESBA) and recently one started in Naples, in Italy but again operated as a UK parkrun (JFC Naples). Like with the parkruns operating at correctional establishments, it is possible to get an invite to these parkruns, but you do need to know someone. There are currently 32 parkruns running at correctional establishments, 23 in the UK (including two that club colleagues have run at), 2 in Ireland and 7 in Australia. Another way in which access can be restricted is by putting a parkrun on an island with a restricted ferry service. Inis Meáin parkrun started on the Aran Islands in Ireland a couple of months ago but they had an invasion of world tourists on Saturday using a hired ferry boat. Events 2 through 8 had averaged 20 finishers but Saturday's event had 261. For local reasons this parkrun starts at 11am. That means that anyone walking the event in over one hour doesn't finish their parkrun until the afternoon! Inis Meáin didn't have the largest increase in attendance across the parkruns on Saturday - nearer to home Bicester attendance grow from an average of just over 200 to 682 due to an influx of visitors from the National Vegan Campout at the Newark Showground, including 300 members of the parkrun group Vegan Runners. Note that both of these influxes had been carefully coordinated with the host parkrun including providing additional volunteers - though perhaps in both cases the actual number of visitors had significantly exceeded the estimates.
